I wonder if they'd have been as successful if they'd chosen the name 'No'?

Hi Steve, if you start a new thread, I will be more than happy to add my impressions of the standmounters as soon as I can tonight.

Strange Days

45rpm vinyl

Posted on: 27 May 2015 by Clive B

Now listening to this which arrived today. Just got it to rip on the NS01 despite several scratches on the first CD (it's on its way back to the river pronto). Currently not convinced about the sound quality, but despite being a massive (early era) Yes fan, currently I think I'm glad I only purchased the highlights 2CD version. But as for the music... Well, it's Yes at their best. I rest my case!

Partly inspired by the Bluesmen names on the Blues thread in the padded cell. Also, have only recently become aware of this brilliant early 90s proper Rock album.

Maybe.

Actually I'd hope that their musical virtuosity would always win the day, whatever name they chose. But I wonder what was the psychological effect of the affirmative name.

Richter's Appassionata is like someone pour a bucketful of ice water over your head.

Volatile and temperamental as Horowitz but perhaps more focused and menacing due to ultra sharp but controlled attacks. It is amazing how he can keep the individual note so clearly separated whilst maintaining a hammer drilling speed.

Richter never warms up even for usually a sweet reflective 2nd movement keeping his cool distance throughout.

A bit unfair being played right after the fierly Richter performance but this 1962 Connoisseur audiophile recording of Moravec's Appassionata is too gentlemanly self contained for my taste.

His quiet parts are expressive enough but It's a bit of a same same. The tunes need fire. After all this tune is about passion.

The plus side is that these records are one of the most natural sounding piano recording on vinyl.

Falls into the alt-country/indie folk genres. Finally gave this a second listen.  The opening track is really strong, and the whole album is good.  Need to give this some more listens.

A short listen on youtube but not enough to decide so just taken a punt on the CD from amazon.

Stunning performances of two not-too-well-known but important cello sonatas.
