Paul McCartney and Wings. Red Rose Speedway (1973). On re-issue Columbia vinyl from 1980. One of my favorite Macca 'solo' LPs. I find that both the electric and acoustic guitar strings throughout are especially well recorded.

Ida Haendel/Celibidache/LSO: Brahms Violin Concerto 53 recording.

25 year old Haendel. Sweet, delicate whistling style.

Testament mono reissue.

Beethoven's fifth, by Perahia and Haitink/ KCO. An old favorite, but a bit formal compared with Zimerman / Bernstein. Better recorded, though.

I can hardly credit that I had chosen to ignore her voice and music until this year!

Surprsinigly I loved their 1st concerto. Recently I located the same 5th in vinyl so I should give it a lisetn later on.

Haha Perahia and Haitink together and you loved it? Who'd have thought... do you have a favorite Emperor?

Nice to listen to this again, is it really 21 years ago! ...

"Some of the songs on the album are performed in front of a live audience and some are studio recordings; some recorded in Marrakech in the open air and some at a cottage in Snowdonia. Overall the result is a very rich musical experience" - An Amazonian

EJ, A nice surprised. Neither Haitink or Perahia are known for their Beethoven interpretation but somehow this particular combo works for me. There's more drama, expressions and charisma than Bishop/Davis for instance. He adds so much more textures and interests. Haitink is generally out of the way providing excellent backdrop and foil for Perahia. Rhythmically brilliant. 2nd movement is elegant but less timid and flowery filgrees. More extrovert with added insistance just as Beethoven would have played( in my mind ). Modern sounding 3rd movement with jazzy walking bass. Also it is tighter than Haitink's earlier set with Arrau. I love his cadenza albeit not his own but all the more adds to the freshness!

5th concerto is very popular but alas, it isn't my fave so my experience isn't anywhere near the 1st which I never get tired of listening. ( prefer 1 & 4 )

But here are my fave 5th for various reasons. Oddly Kempf's 5th didn't get on my list here on all 3 sets ( Van Kempen/Leitner/Mori)! Playfulness I have heard and love of his 1st Concerto isn't there for some reasons.

Thanks! I also prefer 1 & 4 (and 3) to 2 and 5, for some reason the last seems most difficult to convincingly pull off. Definitely Zimerman for me. Of the ones you list, I only have Lewis/Belohlavek (really need to get Pollini as well...), will break it out as part of the current run of 5ths.

Cheers
