New RT album "Still" available in USA this week, next week in UK.
Posted on: 25 June 2015 by hungryhalibut
Would that be a cover of the Joy Division classic perchance?
Posted on: 25 June 2015 by BigH47
I doubt it as Richard almost always writes his own and the new one is indeed all his own songs.

Errrr, I wasn't being serious, though an RT version of Transmission would be interesting. Anyway, it's now preordered from Qobuz for £7.99.

Paul Simon. Graceland. On original CD from 1986. A sonic and musical gem.

Prokofiev Piano Concerto No.3
Alois Klima/Prague Radio Symphony
František Maxián PIano
Unknown orchestra and pianist. Somewhat gutless and middle of the road missing Prokofievs' wacky 'tude.
Light-weight presentation with soft touch piano. Not as keyed up as Janis and undinably sounding a bit safe.
Partnering Kabalewski Concerto No.3 is more interesting. ( played by a different piano player )

Finally got to listen to the famous Mercury recording of Russian concert in 1962.
There is sparks between the orchestra an piano. Janis never misses the beat with iron fisted control and clarity and note delivery. Still not as obsessed and possessed as Richter, however.
The trouble is it start losing momentum due to Janis sounding same same.
It's a good looking performance, tho.

Metallica ...And Justice For All. On CD from 1988. My son's CD. I get the sense this is good music for its genre. The sound is fast, clean, and surgically precise, but rather unforgiving in that regard given the strong emphasis on kick drum. I've finally found a Bob Ludwig mastering I don't care for. Heavy metal or heavy percussion?

I find his Schubert playing a bit too much, so I don't often return to this...

HH I did answer seriously as my knowledge of JD is limited to one song or another of AH's wonderful offerings of WWII .
Can't answer for how good their oven gloves are though.
Posted on: 26 June 2015 by hungryhalibut
Their oven gloves are pretty good as far as I know. But I'm lost by the AH reference! Let's hope the new RT album has better sound than his last few, one of which is virtually unlistenable.

AH = Mr Hitler and his SS Joy Division.
Can't say I've noticed any problems with Richards recent releases.
I just listen to the music. There are very very few recordings that prevent me from that.

Thanks Howard, I was being dim there. Have you got Live in Crawley 1993, which Richard recorded with Danny Thompson at the Hawth? It's my favourite RT album, with just enough chat between songs - he does ramble on bit sometimes!
Posted on: 26 June 2015 by BigH47
That is one of very few I haven't got. I'll check it out.

2Cellos, In2ition, something different and good fun. I love these two guys, the only classical(ish) music I would happily pay to go and watch, and excellent versions of modern rock and pop songs

Not a great album on many fronts but I find if I need to get up for a pee within the first two minutes then the system is performing optimally!
Actually the 2Qute is making this bearable in 'hi-fi' terms.

Rush, Caress of Steel, from way back when they were still doing full on prog. Slighty naive but a brilliant album and this recording of it is superb. 24 bit flac via Audirvana/Hugo
