Johannes Brahms:  Barry Douglas (Klavier)

Volume Four in the series of complete works for the solo piano music of Brahms.  Since Barry Douglas started this series, it seems to be my go to set for now.  I am expecting at least one more in Volume 5 and it should be complete then?

I used to complain about the pieces being mixed up and I still do prefer to have the music in sets starting at Op. 1 and in chronological order from there but for whatever reason, Douglas decided to mix them up.   Quite simply though, the playing is rather extraordinary so I suppose I could overlook this one little drawback.

Dvorák | Smetana | Suk:  Sitkovetsky Trio

Antonín Dvorák:     Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor Op. 65

Bedrich Smetana:  Piano Trio in G minor Op. 15

Josef Suk:              Elegy for Piano Trio Op. 23

I have so many recordings of this same music or similar combinations and I simply never tire of this music.  Every different group brings something new to the table and it is always inspiring to hear this music afresh over and over.  So far I like this your group and am also waiting now for their soon to be released Mendelssohn Piano Trios in a couple of weeks (at least in my region).  I think this has been available for the lucky people at the centre of the world for a while.

Neighbours out and this album needs some decent volume when it becomes visceral.

Nikhil Banerjee - Raag Bhimpalasi

From the Raga Records CD Afternoon Ragas, recorded live in Rotterdam in 1970. This guy is my favourite Indian classical musician (sadly deceased), blending an incredible technique with a wonderful lyricism. The Alap (the slow bit where he explores the notes of the raga, which can sound a bit like tuning up but is usually my favourite part) lasts about 10 minutes, after which he develops the melody and ratchets up the beat beautifully.

I completely understand stand why some folk find this sort of music hard to get into, but once you do it's like discovering a wonderland of sound. If you like long-form guitar picking or Jam Bands then it may be worth persevering.

(The above is maybe a giveaway that I can ramble on for hours about this sort of music, whilst at the same time admitting that many of the technicalities escape me - I just love Indian Classical for the music)
