The Devil Makes Three - Do Wrong Right

(2009) CD

First listen; did not disappoint.  A fun band to listen to.

Courtesy of Amazon:

''Do Wrong Right'' by The Devil Makes Three was originally released in 2009. With a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues, The Devil Makes Three is a breath of fresh musical air. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio consisting of guitarist/front man Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music. The band is touring constantly and has garnered a legion of hard core fans.

I don't play this album as often this year as I did last but when I do it quickly reminds how good it is. The song Stranger still has the ability to produce goosebumps!

Oistrakh/Gauk/USSR State Orchestra: Beethoven Violin Concerto 1948 or 1950? recording.

Refined and delicate but avoid a syrupy mess. This is not a particualy a flashy playing yet he deliniates much of emotional contents off the score. Lucid and fluid 1st movement. The music unfolds like silk threads in his hands. Even the cadenza is more lyrical rather than display of a fireworks. Largetto starts in a pensive mood. Gauk takes judicious tempo to breath the life into the delicate melody line that leads the tune. Orchestration reminds me of a faithful friend standing by watching and supporting. Rondo finale is breathtaking showcasing his technical excelence without losing the delicate touch. In spite the high noise and poor condition of the record, the fiddle stays immediate and intimate.

Oistrakh Trio: Beethoven Archduke Trio

Violin is distinct with clear stops and starts of note compared to Szerying's liquid style. This set is clearly recorded to showcase Oistrakh rather than 3 musicians pulling the same weight making up a cohesive tune. Poor piano player's got the worst of it.

This set, however, shows Beethoven's chamber music in a grand scale. I wish it was more personal and intimate like his Beethoven Violin Concerto. I did noticed tho, most of his EMI London recordings has this professional polish in that they sound great but bit lacking in humanity.

(2012) CD ripped to iTunes AIFF.

Haven't listened to this in a while and really fits the kind of music I want to hear right now.

Russian Superstar Trio!: Gilels/Kogan/Rostropovich Beethoven Archduke Trio 1956 recording

Very intimate and cohesive performance. Noone tries to upstage anyeone and everone is pulling an equal weight. The result is a sweet and flowing yet highly textured expressive rendition. Inteersting to follow the instrument separately as each instrument is played with plenty of vigor and wit. The final movement is tender and gentle. No theatrical drama even the tail end of the tune keepin everything as a natural progression. PIty for this historical grade sound quality, however.
