Rush, Presto, sometimes overlooked but no less excellent for that and contains a couple of really good tracks that have survived the ravages of time very well.  24 bit flac via Audirvana/Hugo

Linn Records' latest Mozart Requiem with John Butt/Dunedin Consort.

Whilst it will not be mistaken for an analogue recording, irony is that this clean and distortion free digital recording sounds much better than Linn's past analogue vinyl I own. There is a slight sliver of thinness and dryness in strings but the voices stay free of congestions even the chorus at high SPL. Altho it is not a natural sounding Decca record (think Crespin), clear diction and details with excellent separations between singers. Vinyl is flat and dead quiet however my copy has a slight off-centre hole. ( bummer but not bad enough to return ) It's said to be pressed at Pallas in Germany.

From the top a pent up energy is felt. It does not have the usual gravitas of the heavy timpani or scale of bigger orchestra but what we end up is a tremendous intensity created by human voices. The Soprano ( Joanne Lunn ) is quite impressive with bell like tones with no sign of strain. Her voice carries through and hovers like an angel.

The tempo is quite fast right up there with Gardiner set and it reminds me of a passing violent storm which leaves an impression of fresh ground with everything anew.

The only gripe I have on the performance is the Lacrimosa does not have much of lucidity nor feeling of sorrow.  It usually provides a nice contrast to the heavy bits but I am missing that on this set. I generally like the direct style of Historically Informed Performances but I would have liked a touch more of schmaltz ( or wider dynamic expressions ).

P.S. The record comes with a free download but it's only for Redbook and MP3 files only. For a high res download, you have to pay again.

The Cars. Candy-O (1979). On HDCD from 2005. The punchy, fast, accurate recording and mastering of this HDCD serves the new wave sound well. I love the music and the overall result on my system is quite impressive with a wide soundstage.

This is just recently discovered work from a great composer who was lost in history..... Had in is his name....., very seldom I have a tagging issue - but this is one.

As usual the playing of Brendel is beyond any doubts...

Bert,

thanks for your advice how to post a screenshot from your Naim app! I have to explore this.

It seems you entered the name Hadin instead of his correct name Jospeh Haydn?

Hi Bert,

no no just a joke, I made the mistake myself in ripping the cd, no software can fix this as I use a convention of composer and name of the pieces after it. So it's only me to blame. And finally less then 5 mistakes on over 5700 albums is not a bad score......

I've always wanted that CD - very rare and i think only in mini CD format. A superb TV drama too made all the better by this haunting music.

Same as here. I gave a surface listening to the sextet but i think that Cruel is his best. Arcangels aside.

Bert!

Have you ripped 5700 CD's? Wow!  I heard one guy in Utrecht had ripped 8000 CD's, incredible.

How long does it take to hear 8000 CD's? Assume you play 3 CD's per night, 5 days per week, 48 weeks per year, you still need 11 years to hear them once!

While not everything is a rip - also some of them are downloads. However checking the tags etc is the same amount of work.

I think it took me close to 5 months to get it done. And basically meant that I was having my PC in the living room and always exchanging CD's while watching TV etc. On weekend or holidays I could normally get to about 60-70 CD's a day. So yes it was a crazy type of job. But it's behind me - so I am happy.....

You can buy it used on amazon, 10 Euros, or 15 odd euros for the black gold.

Despite the album title this is more of a nod towards Tangerine Dream and their music rather than any attempt to copy that album. Good Berlin School by Perge.
