After LZII I thought I'd continue the theme.  I remember waiting for what seemed an age for LZIII to be released and then on first listening thinking 'what's this acoustical stuff?' .......but I reached track 4 (one of the all-time great LZ songs) and all was well with the world again. Of course I quickly grew to appreciate the Friends, Gallows Pole  etc but it was a shock at the time.

On vinyl.

Black Sabbath   "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"    on c.d.

This is their most psychedelic sounding album, lyrically and musically, so is the cover. This could easily be mistaken for '70's kitsch at first glance; it has a rich variety of layers and textures, and really explores the nature of being caught up in a world of illusion.

Having listened to disc one a couple of evenings ago I thought I'd listen to disc two this evening.  Lovely recording of a live performance.

I didn't get on with I and II at the time. Mates had them but not me. III however was a revelation and was the one that brought me on board. Loved it then and love it now. Conversely most of my mates gave it a miss until the next lp! By the 4th lp they really were or at least seemed like the biggest band in the world. Must go and give it a listen.

Ludwig van Beethoven:  Paul Badura-Skoda, Klavier

Die Klaviersonaten

My anger is somewhat subsided now but not by much.  After spending a couple hours this morning writing a review of this it disappeared into thin air and I could retrieve nothing and it is lost for good.  After this happening several times per week minimum, I think I finally figured out that I needed to turn off the swipe page left or right on the mouse.  Just putting my finger back on the mouse usually sent the page off into oblivion.

To summarize:  I like this recording very much.  Viennese sensibility entirely authentic through performer, piano (Boesendorfer), and recording label.  The focus is on a clear line, phrasing, and colour.  This recording will go right near the top along the other treasures from Arrau or Backhaus and the like.

Listening to this now on Spotify. I'm not sure I have the vocabulary to describe this adequately, but imagine if the Neil Cowley Trio was piano, violin & cello, with a leaning towards Penguin Cafe.

Whatever, this is really good, and I urge a listen. Thanks, Denis.

Glad you liked it Gary, they are a wonderful live band. One of my most enjoyable releases from last year.
