Tosca: Dehl9  2003 release

My soundtrack from the past.

Sort of like electronic downtempo Satie.

(2009)

Spent a lot of today up and down the motorway into Edinburgh and back (twice!), Evanescence hit the spot on an absolutely perfect autumn day and evening with a sunset to die for on the final leg home.

A live recording. Quite briskly played.

So far, really enjoyed Gabetta's recordings. I wonder if she will record the Bach Suites?

This as the infamous CD that clipped the NAP150 when driving the Briks at a moderate volume. I lost two tweeters.

Kuma,

Hard to believe that the gentle Marian McPartland has been destroying speakers. Did you have a hard time finding replacement tweeters?

A great album.  Too bad David Clayton-Thomas died so young.

You inspire me to enjoy the whole album through...

Another good find on Friday...you know you're sick in the head when you keep buying used vinyl even though you can't technically play it until your deck is repaired.

Sokolov: Chopin Preludes Op.28  2008 recording

So much better than his earlier 90's Live recording in terms of sound quality and the performance.

Switching from Pollini, this is a highly emotional and way more fleshed out.

He eases in to the tune and starts his story. This is the longest running Preludes spanning well over 40 min. the Raindrop Prelude is whopping 7 min. but this performance well justifies the length. This is a kind of recital I wish I were there to experience for real.

I think DG recording team did a terrific job. Gone is that pitch black digital abyss and the sound remains highly natural and realistic in spite digital recording. A great mount of low end weight and piano resonance are captured here. Truly scary funeral march and the final 3 chords of nailing the coffin leaves me speechless.

I've bought this record when it came out last year so not sure if later pressing is any good but the pressing quality is excellent at least my copy.

Haim,

You'd better believe it! ( this is the trouble with living with orphaned vintage speakers )

Tried a few Scan D2008 but apparently they don't match the voicing of old tweets due to different sensitivity etc... What we ended up doing is a friend found out Rega's old speakers used to use the same Scan as '81 vintage Briks so those were the closest match. ( I still prefer the original tweets ) A lot of respect goes to Rega for supporting their product that old.

Luckily I still had two good upfiring tweeters so swap those to the front and put the Rega Scan to less critical upfiring duty. So it all worked out OK.

I should have never used anything less than NAP250 with the Briks and that someone told me piano is actually quite demanding of power.

Live and learn.

Paul Simon. The Rhythm Of The Saints. Original CD from 1990. I don't play this often, but seem to like it more each time I do. Could be my musical tastes mellowing with age. The echo on Simon's vocals provides an ethereal quality that floats above the complex percussions to yield a comprehensive, atmospheric flow to the album.

Nirvana. Live At Reading. On CD from 2009, recorded in 1992. I've got blisters on my ears. A totally visceral, raw, and spirited performance. I'm starting to wonder if this isn't among the best rock concerts ever recorded?
