Mr Fjeld,

Sheer happenstance I'm responding to two or your posts in a row, but coincidentally I heard part of this album hours ago at a get-together with fellow Naim enthusiasts in the Seattle area. Gary brought "The King Is Dead" to the party. SQ was excellent with notable timbre to the strings and tight percussion. Only heard a few tracks, but seems to be good stuff.

Agreed 100% Joe - it's a great album! I also play it a lot including their latest album, which I became aware of in this very thread. Oh, and the sound from Roseanne Cash is really outstanding. Btw, you guys from the Seattle area have a great thing going on with your hifi meetings! Wish we had something like that were I live. At least we can claim to be blessed with the same rain soaked climate ....

I have not listened to this in well over forty years and now I know why. It is certainly a classic for many people but Moody Blues music never "did it for me" at the time and after this listening still doesn't.

Listening to this classic 1994 remaster and it's sounding very good indeed.

As the late Alan Freeman would have said, "Not 'arf!" The 'Definitive Edition Remasters' from '94 are the best in my opinion. This is one of my all time favourite albums.

Ah yes dear old "Fluff Freeman". I agree with you about these '94 Definitive Remasters they are excellent and this data would seem to back up those thoughts.

I would be interested to see the stats for the 2008 remaster as many people have complained about them being mastered with a lot of compression.

Yeah, some of that 70's to 80's "jazz" can get a tad grim at times...what talented artists had to do to make money.  And ST was one of the worst offenders, although by no means was he alone.  (Hell, look at him - he's even dressed like Tony Manero.)

He started out with Blue Note making series of excellent records then more funk stuff at CTI. I realise that a good artist need to keep up with time ( think Bowie ) but it is hard to believe that Turrentine was actually enjoying playing 'Manhattan Skyline included in this album. :/

This is the proper Turrentine.

From the late 60s to the 70s Hard Bop is pretty much dead, and younger artist starts to experiment with free style avant garde jazz which I can' really get into.

McCoy Tyner who also started with Impulse! and Blue Note shift his direction to more freer style at Milestone label.

Personally I much prefer his output at the Blue Note. This is more my kind of groove.
