(2014)

Not something I would buy but its quite good fun if you are in the mood for some rock that has lot's of 'tunes' and a whiff of old glam' rock about it.

Many thanks for the introduction to this one Steve J, its exquisite and one that had passed me by. I have just ordered the 40th Anniversary remaster which is supposed to be very good.

Johm Coltrane - My favourite things

Posted on: 21 October 2015 by Mr Fjeld

Used to listen to my older sister's cassettes of The Police in the early eighties. A few years ago I noticed this compilation was on sale - all recorded songs included. Always enjoyed their music which seemed to shift from punk to reggae inspired.

"Message in a Box - The complete recordings". The Police

Mahler Symphony No. 2, Rafael Kubelik, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

It's from a 14 LP box set on DG which I can remember buying from HMV in Bristol. Unusually I don't appear to have kept the receipt, but I don't think it could have cost more than £20.

Sounding so good; so much like real music!

Love Motown as it is the sound of my teenage years.

Grover Washington Jr. : Skylarkin' 1980 release

Came out after the Gramm winning 'Winelight' so sounding awfully similar to that. The only reason I am still keeping this album is for his cover of Stevie Wonder's ' I can' Help It'.

Later, Esperanza Spalding also played the cover.

Grover Washington  Jr. : Come Morning 1981 release

80s nostalgia trip.

  • Bass – Marcus Miller
  • Congas, Percussion – Ralph MacDonald
  • Drums – Steve Gadd
  • Electric Piano – Richard Tee
  • Guitar – Eric Gale

With this line up, pretty much this was the top of smooth jazz in the US back then.

Grover Washington Jr. : Then and Now  1988

A complete change of personnel as well as in direction.

This is more of straight up bluesy jazz with many original tunes from the participants as well as great covers of classics by Ellington, Victor Young and Oliver Nelson.

  • Richard Lee Steacker: Electric & Acoustic Guitars
  • Tommy Flanagan, Herbie Hancock, James "Sid" Simmons: Piano
  • Ron Carter: Electric & Upright Bass

Great piano playing by Hancock on 'Blues for D.P' and 'Just Enough'. Crisp and groovy James Simmon's 'French Connections' and Gorgeous Tommy Flanagan's 'Something Borrowed and Something Blue.' ( more impressed with his piano than Washington's horn playing to be honest )

This album probably didn't make it to the chart but so much better than most of his output probably because of its prominent piano lead tunes. Here's 'Blues for D.P' written by Ron Carter. Listen to his mean walking bass and Hancock's classy ending chord.
