Hank Mobley : Workout 1961 Recording
Another terrific Blue Note reissue from Music Matters 33 series.
- Hank Mobley — tenor saxophone
- Grant Green — guitar
- Wynton Kelly — piano
- Paul Chambers — bass
- Philly Joe Jones — drums
Smokin' from the top with Philly Joe Jones' drum intro, the band stay high energy in a groovy hard bop mode for the entire Side A. Jones pretty much stays up front through out the entire album along with Mobley. Cymbal crush and percussive attacks are super realistic as usual and one special thing about this album is for the first time out of all the Mobley records I own piano sounds great! perhaps still not as clear as drums but way better clarity and presence. The catchy descending piano chords on the title track is heard adding texture to the lively drums and horn.
Moving right along, I love the swinging bluesy Uh-huh written by Mobley with Grant Green's mellow guitar. Rather traditional styling but hard-bop at its best.
Winton Kelly's piano opens the pretty last tune called 'Greasin' Easy', another bluesy swinging tune. Van Gelder's early recording always ignore the piano but this one the piano is treated much better than usual.
The B-52's. Time Capsule. On HDCD from 1998. "Pass the tanning butter"
My favourite internet station back on line. Only through Dash though – meaning that I have to use the PC Sound Capture in order to get it into my Uniti.
A bit of pleasant soft folk music this morning. This is his 11th or 12th album

Haven't played any Mobley or in fact jazz in what seems like ages will need to dig some albums out.

Having played some Who the other day has put me in the mood for some more, this great album will do nicely.
I've given up on the pictures, the internet hates me! Marillion, Clutching at Straws, perfect prog rock and worth a listen just for Sugar Mice. Flac via audirvana/hugo
I have started using Imageshack to upload and download pictures and have has no problems. Give it a try if you haven't already.
Thanks Nigel, I've been trying to find a way to post pics here without the faff of having to upload them first by linking to pics in amazon etc but it seem to be very hit and miss
This album passed me by over the years. I wish it hadn't, it's arguably my favourite Johnny Winter album now. Really good blues with a simple three piece setup. This is a CD rip but I shall have to look out for a decent vinyl copy now.
Ry Cooder 'Broadcast from the Plant 1974' streamed from Tidal - Exceptional music and recording.

This 4 CD Close Up series is very good and rare because these stripped back versions of her originals manage to offer more.
I just had to give this another play because it's so good.
Some gentle Mary Black for Sunday afternoon.
