Great band. Unfortunately I missed them on tour at the beginning of the year.  Heaven knows when they'll be back in the uk!

1989 release from Mobile Fidelity; Ultradiscâ„¢ 24 KT Gold CD.

I haven't listened to this in a really, really, really long time.  It came to mind after watching one of the lip sync battles on The Late Show w/ Jimmy Fallon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4ajQ-foj2Q     I find all of these fun to watch.

Just side one of (possibly) my favourite EJ album, an album nobody else seems to rate. This 2010 SHMCD sounds very good.

Unfortunately the Dead have always been one band I struggle to get into so I am probably the last person you should ask whether or not if this is good.

For me it is ok but I think Dead fans will love it.

Perhaps not all - there is a certain contingent of hard core Dead fans who are not impressed with the post-Jerry tour at all.  I work with a guy who followed the Dead on the road for a couple of years back in the 90s and owns God knows how many albums (you literally can't ask him about one that he doesn't know including many bootlegs) he got a button or sticker (I forget which) that proudly proclaims "I wasn't there" pertaining to the Soldier Field event.

That said, I went to a Dead Head dominated college back in the late 70s, and I have a hard time believing those folks didn't love the reunion...these are folks who would buy a recording of Phil Lesh farting!

It does look like a beautifully put together package...

That button sounds like a worthwhile purchase!  To be honest, I was really on the fence about this one, but decided to get it anyway.  I think the collector bug took hold of my credit card.  Going in with an open mind though.

"these are folks who would buy a recording of Phil Lesh farting!" That one is called Seastones if you can still find it.

Hank Mobley: Mobley's Message 1956 release Mono

  • Hank Mobley - tenor saxophone
  • Donald Byrd - trumpet
  • Barry Harris - piano
  • Doug Watkins - bass
  • Art Taylor - drums
  • Jackie McLean - alto saxophone (#4 only)

Mobley was just 26 as a leader but includes two new tunes written by him amongst familiar standard and hard hitting bop tunes by masters. ( Powell/Monk/Parker et all )

The album opens with two upbeat fast moving tunes 'Bouncing with Bud' followed by Monk's '52nd Street Theme'. Art Taylor's drumming sounding a bit like Art Blakey.

My favourite tunes out of this album is on the B side:

Parker's "Au Privave" where guest Jackie McLean on alto joins in the band becomes a sextet. Rapport between three horn players ( Mobley/Byrd/McLean) is quite fun and they are on.

For a power ballad, Rodgers & Hart's "Little Girl Blue" Mobley playing solo showcasing his lyrical melodious quality. Interestingly the back half of the tune sounds better especially on Moblely's.

This is an Analogue Production Prestige Mono series from a few years back. Remastered by Kevin Gray ( the same engineer as current Music Matters Blue Note 33 reissues ) and pressed at QRP. Playing right after Music Matters 'Workout' the noise floor is audibly high and less note decays after the initial transient impact. Over all clarity suffers because of it. The sound of drums particularly cymbals sound tinsy and fake and upper register horns have a peak and slight congestions. Altho, this is recorded by Van Gelder, the overall presentation sounds a bit distant. Barry Harris piano and Watkins' bass are almost non existent. Piano solo in 'Minor Disturbance' is wooly and ill defined and the intro on 'Little Girl Blue' which begins with just bass and piano doesn't quite have the right tension before the horn joins in.

Fine playing and well put together album but the remastering could have been a bit better. Altho, possibly due to a bad tape. Not sure how good tape house keeping under Prestige label.

To my mind his last great album, I have original vinyl and it evokes great memories. His voice was still in good shape and the musicians are excellent.
