Planning on listening to familiar recordings of the Ring operas this winter, starting with Haitink's Rheingold.

So how do you approach it, EJ? Do you listen to the full Haitink cycle, then move on to others or do you pick and choose? Haitink Rheingold, Karajan Valkure etc.?

(The reason I didn't suggest a Siegfried was because I always have difficulty with that one.)

I've continued to enjoy this album since it was released and have never bored of it.  And following the nDAC firmware update I'm delighted to say this evening's performance is the best I've heard yet.

I recently purchased the trilogy of Three of a Perfect Pair, Discipline, and Beat, all of which will be new to me.  But before trying them I thought I'd remind myself what 'classic' King Crimson sounds like.  Mighty fine, actually...

Continuing with this great guitar jazz...

Das Rheingold, from the underrated Levine cycle. The dry recording balance gives impressive range, but doesn't help James Morris, who just sounds better with Haitink. Haitink also scores with Theo Adam as a more interesting Alberich than Wlaschiha, despite the latter's purely vocal superiority. On other counts, the two casts are at similarly high levels. Levine has a more emphatic way with the score than Haitink, but both generate their share of fantastic moments within long tension arches. (By contrast Solti is more stop-and-go and Keilberth is foursquare).

Not sure yet, but leaning to listening to each opera in three or four different versions before going to the next.

I'd not heard of Christoph Poppen until I read about him in Gramophone. What a superb violinist, and with the Hillard as well. Just wonderful.
