Wispelwey: Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1  1999 Recording

Fast forward 40 years and this is a very different presentation from the Ormandy/Rostropovich landmark premier recording.

Wispelway injects lyricism to this awfully angular and stark tune. The opening movement is dancing and folk song elements are pushed to the foreground. Orchestration is making sure it does not get too cozy keeping the urgency.  Moderato is lofty and expansive yet it still retains micro details to keep one’s ears fixed to inner working of the music. Cadenza is quite experssive. Wispelway has almost Casals like mellifluous push and pull continuity that draws me in. And his sense of timing is cunningly natural. He’s not an extrovert like Rostropovitch but his playing is just as compelling.

Their first album and one band to watch. These 2 have the potential to become the next Rawlings and Welch. Would love to hear them with a full band behind them.

Mr Mehldau in a more unusual setting - gets mixed reviews but I've played in a lot since its release.

I can't get to terms with and not just while I have different expectations when listening to Brad.

Been listening to the vinyl version of this for the past couple of hours - haven't listened to very much music over the past few days and this big, brassy and breezy blast of NY is just what the doctor ordered...
