Ringo Starr. Ringo Rama. CD+DVD from 2003. Ringo attracts and surrounds himself with excellent musicians both on tour and when making albums, and this one is no different. Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Willie Nelson, and Shawn Colvin contribute and the music is tight. Unfortunately, the production is heavy with a modern sound and ample compression and loudness. And thirteen tracks of Ringo singing lead vocals can become excessive.

Schubert's songs with orchestra directed by Abbado.

Fasinating to learn the line up of composers who turned a piano part to a full orchestra rending.

Listz's admiration for Schubert's work is well known and also he made many of transcription for piano and here one of the tune ( The Young Nun ) is turned to a full orchestra score for the voices.

Here is the list of composers:

 Benjamin Britten

 Johannes Brahms

 Max Reger

 Hector Berlioz

 Franz Liszt

 Webern

Jacques Offenbach

Abbado's direction is sensible and smart not to overwhelm the singer but to enhance the story telling. Altho, I feel that Winterreise still needs to be a single piano accompaniment rather than the orchestra to add the feeling of lonliness.

For the voices, I am not too keen on either singers, however.

Paul McCartney. Tripping The Live Fantastic. On 2 CDs from 1990. Two full capacity CDs of familiar music performed live are a great accompaniment while tinkering late at night in the workshop.

That I every now and then when I have short time put this one, must mean something. Obviously it's on the top of the list, however there is more to it. I like the gentle and fluent music, and I believe it's well executed.

Santana ~ Supernatural (1999)

This is an eclectic mix of styles and collaborations, but it does really work - most of the time. 'Maria, Maria', 'Smooth' and the instrumental track are standouts. Most of the album being worth all the nominations and praise which were heaped on it at the time.

Another mag freebie CD, from Mojo again, and a pretty diverting collection of psych/freak stuff, a lot of which was unfamiliar:

Baka Beyond ~ Spirit of the Forest (1993)

Their award winning debut album.

"The rhythms of the Baka from the Cameroon rainforest [and the fusion of African and Celtic music in equal measure] somehow resonate in many culture's music. Baka Beyond use this to bind together the music of different cultures and genres into one vibrant sound."

Graeme,

last year i purchased the Dick's Picks vol.4 vinyl box-set 6 x LPs.

I tried very hard to dig the 1970 live recordings but unfortunately the vinyl quality was a huge letdown.

A very compressed poor SQ on warp-crappy awful pressings, surface noise, pops, clicks etc.
And the vinyls are not really proper LPs in the true sense meaning of Long Player; too many have only 10 little minutes or so of recorded music per side and LP6 has a blank B side : <
Shockingly poor value for money when you consider the Dead's vinyl is often very expensive priced.

[and a complete rip off in this case].

How well does the digital source is hold up...?

It's fab music imo but we deserve to hear it and enjoy with-out compromise : )
