The Melco felt like needing some rock...

The Melco brought more weight, more rounded tone, more depth....

Not as bad as I initially thought...

Garbage's debut album. Unapologetic and bags of drive and energy, even the lyrics. Supervixen is a excellent opening. I've followed all their albums since.

Roisin Murphy - Hairless Toys. Because the guy in the record shop recommended it. It is good.

Yellowjackets - Timeline. Because I fancied listening to some Robben Ford in a jazz context.

Swedish prog rock, this has not been a hit for them perhaps because many listeners have forgotten what it means to be a prog rock band and therefore to be pushing boundaries (progressive). Sounds good to me.

Lugansky's rubato is so subtle, it only slightly slurs the notes enough to just nudge the rythm, rather than distort it. He uses quite a lot of it in Schubert, and I'm still getting used to it. Not overly emotional or personal in approach: Lugansky doesn't give the impression he lives the music; he reflects on it from the outside, as a skilled narrator. It's a valid approach - and the recital is intriguingly well played, by turns grand and intimate, with superb control over dynamics. Recorded quality is very good, but not up to the best that modern hires has to offer.

Cheers,

EJ

A superb album. Prior to Currency of Man it was my favourite Melody Gardot album.
