Shpongle ~ Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland (2009)

"There are a number of obvious influences here (ozrics, gong etc), but I don't think that this is a detriment to the sound. The first track, electroplasm, sounds as though it has escaped from ozrics' strangeitude album, but then the album starts to develop a life of its own. The second track, Shpongelese spoken here, then moves into space dub/trance. The album then moves into melodic electronica with an ambient edge, in some places reminding you of William Orbit. The fourth track has some hypnotic beats mixed with a trancey indian vocal adding that extra depth, but this also reminds me of ultramarine in places, especially around the my kingdom time, making me wonder if there was any connection. But I must say that I absolutely adore this album.

A long time since I listened to this artist, though I'd have a quick blast before the football starts. Still rocks like I remember

Shpongle ~ Tales of the Inexpressible (2001)

"Many can compare Shpongle and Hallucinogen to being like the Dead or Phish of the electronic. As the foremost known band around the world representing psychedelic culture, ...these guys are one of the heaviest hitting electronic acts out there."

Here's a group who were almost universally slagged off in their time (late 70s/early 80s), unjustly accused of being Joy Division copyists (they were actually closer, with their wonky synths and lofty themes, to prog). This CD is a 1990 reissue of their 1982 debut (and sole) album, The Plateau Phase plus some singles, including the awesomely strange "Concorde Square".

I'm listening 'cause I want justice for the Crispies!

Ooo, Crispy Ambulance! That's a blast from the past. I had the original vinyl of The Plateau Phase, and never really liked it. I agree though, little like the wonderful Joy Division.

Still got it HH - in that horrible lilac cover...

The Crispies actually reformed around the turn of the millennium, and have made a few albums since, but the original magic has gone...

Hey Colossus: CuckooLifeLikeCuckoo

A friend lent me it to try. Pretty impressed so far, reminds me of Skrew's Burning In Water, Drowning In Flame.

In return I lent him Miles' Sketches Of Spain.

Started with this this evening. Didn't know this music, I only knew his famous Spartacus, but have to say pretty much liked it. My 500 also shines in the rendering...

This is one of my very favourite albums: it's truly wonderful.

Now for an interesting observations. I heard this concert yesterday live. And while we always try to approach live sound, sometimes a recording can better express the dynamics. For instance on this album the dynamics are more pronounced than I heard yesterday in the concert hall, due to acoustics I think, the specific execution and the fact that at home you can go a bit loud if you want...
