The Beatles.  Magical Mystery Tour (1967). Another LP from the MFSL collection. Interesting to read forum lore about the provenance of the stereo masters for this album that supposedly passed back and forth between Capitol and EMI. Copies of subs marked as masters? Not sure what to believe but one thing is readily apparent to me; side 1 sounds better than side 2.

Klemperer’s recording was the result of a passion on his part for the music for it was long outside what EMI considered his “core” repertoire.

He did the recording anyway, and made something of stoical power. more Easter than christmas in spirit, but with staggering power in the choruses. And rather kind support for his eminent soloists. The overture gives a very bad idea of what will follow! It might have been by Brahms in Adagio mode, but thereafter it becomes thoughtful and vital, and sometimes “very” fast even by modern standards.

Klemperer had that disconcerting habit of keeping tempo to the end double bar as in the Hallelujia chorus, which ends in mid air! A wonderfully powerful response to the music!

Dipping into this 2 CD album for the first time, I did not know it existed until a little while ago!

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Steve. I have all the studio albums containing this material and, of course, the RT Live album, but like you, I was unaware of this set. It's always interesting to hear a different take on familiar songs. I shall search for it on Tidal.

Good film as weel!

Gianluigi,

Was it a hit in Italy?

It was a mega hit in Japan and still is! ( I'd say this was on the same level as  weepy Love Story in the US )

I like the movie. It came out in a time when italy was plagued by bomb attacks and class conflict was at one of its peaks. The story is about an italian soldier that got cut out and left behind during the 1943 winter retreat in Russia.

A russian girl finds and saves him and the man ( Marcello Mastroianni) decide to stay and live in Russia in spite he was already married to an italian woman (Sofia Loren).

The fact that the man decides not to get back to italy and prefers Russia and Communism created debates about a movie that first wanted to be more historical than political.

Here's one of the most touching moments: the meeting between the italian and the russian wife

The third of their early albums and arguably the last one before they took a turn towards a more commercial road.

Haven't played this in a while - kind of "unplugged" Black Crowes.
