Never listened to this one before.  Love it.  Dark early 80s post punk sounds with sometimes soaring vocals from Siouxsie.  Notably, John McGeoch (former Magazine) is on guitar and lots of interesting guitar here.

Hagen quartet/Henrich Schiff: Schubert String Quintet in C Major Op.163  1994 recording

Still trying to get a handle on the only String Quintet Schubert ever wrote.

Expansive as his last symphony yet tuneful as his smallest pieces.

Almost the last of their extremely good album years while associated with Virgin records from about here their style started to change away from the more experimental avant grade electronic.

Been playing this a lot - recently released.  I was only aware of Ethan Johns as a producer eg for Ryan Adams - didn't realise he is a multi-instrumentalist played on Ray Lamontagne albums.

Kuma, you could do a lot better than the Hagen Quartett's record - one of their poorest showings on disc, it's like they phoned this one in. Heinrich Schiff played second cello on the Alban Berg Quartett's recording a few years earlier, which remains one of the all time great recordings of this work, although in not so good sound. From more recent vintage, I very much enjoyed the Tokyo Quartet and Arcanto Quartett, both on Harmonia Mundi.

Cheers,

EJ

Both Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman had left the band for this album but standing on it's own it is still a good album in it's own right. I'm glad that I revisited it.

I have heard good things about SOC a band that includes Dave Kerzner so I thought I would try out their take on 70s style prog rock.

What a superb debut album this was from MG.

Absolutely fantastic performances of the two Shostakovich piano trios and an arrangement of Schnittke's string trio, for piano trio. The Schnittke is knotty, of course, but quite accessible for Schnittke standards with some truly stirring passages in the second movement. Great sound from Bis is its own selling point.

More Freddy Kempf - and here he is on typical form: quicksilver, alternately subtle and blunt, not afraid to take risks with some occasional sloppiness as a result, and in general, a great story teller. Kempf, idiosyncrasies and all, is one my favorite pianists on the scene today.

A superb album, Steve.  My CD is remaster on the MCA Decca label and the reproduction is very good (better than on my Pilgrimage CD).  Might explore a SHMCD though.
