Double LP from 1986. Let's see if it can help clear my head.

Quartetto Italiano:

Starting with the Beethoven.  Immediately one hears a difference and unique quality of playing.  As a musician, one is always aware of outcome as you can vary one aspect of a multitude of choices and you arrive at a different interpretation very easily.  As I have gotten older (and hopefully wiser), I realize more and more the importance of slow practice.  So maybe it is because of this that I am progressively tending to be attracted to slower interpretations.  Not correct or incorrect in any way but it just tends to distill the details better for me and you have the opportunity to do so much more with the music.  I haven't heard everything so I don't know but my impression is the Italians here favour more moderate tempos and have a weightier sound.  In the end, this leads to very precise playing, increased expressivity and ultimately, more beauty and musical meaning.  Not for everyone but me me it is perfect.

It probably was not surprising to learn that the Quartetto Italiano in its early years played everything from memory in concerts.

Had a couple of plays of '461 Ocean Boulevard' this morning. Now playing 'Know What I Mean' by Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans. Perfect for a bank holiday lunchtime. Almost good enough to lift the spirits in this dreary, dull weather.

Time for a lovely bit of Haydn, methinks. On CD/SACD:

Musically interesting, however to much background noise for a modern recording...

Happy new year to all!

Starting off with a recent recording of Beethoven's first two concertos by Swiss pianist Louis Schwizgebel. He made headlines last year with an excellent Saint-Saëns album, and here, in musically much more demanding works, he is just as good.

Cheers,

Ej

He was in my potential buy list, so I will have a more close look....

(1977)

I haven't heard this in years and it will do nicely before I start to get my head around preparing and cooking a leg of lamb and accessories for an early evening meal for some "first footing" friends.

Radio Three, And interview with musical examples from Sir Roger Norrington [82].

Even now he is full of energy and one begins to see his point when he explains it!

The Trough Line was picking up lots of atmospherics this morning for the Vienna New Years Day Concert, but is firing on all cylinder this afternoon!
