Stephen Stills Manassas. On the original Atlantic vinyl from 1972. Wide-ranging rock and I especially like the bluesier songs.

Janowitz's Strauss lieders. Never heard of this soprano but she was said to be big in 60-70s.

Nice enough voice but Janowitz is struggling a little with a lower register and loses control in some spots.

All string Metamorphosen piece is unusually solemn for Strauss but this rendition isn't definitive.

For this cycle I prefer Jessye Norman....

Paul McCartney. Run Devil Run. On CD from 1999. McCartney revisits the songs that inspired him while learning his craft and contributes three fitting originals. This has a warm, tubey, echoey, period-correct feeling to its sound. Quickly recorded, the music is energetic, fun, and definitely gets the toe a tappin'.

  Listening to samples from this, out on 9th Feb on cd and double 180g vinyl. Sounds interesting.

Agree Joe,

The recent box set release inspired me to my originals out, after given them a good clean and a play this was the one that sounded the best great SQ.

Mercury Rev, Deserter's Songs, Spotify Premium (at work).

As the biog on Spotify says... "lovely". Ethereal sounding songs well sung and well played.

On excellent condition original vinyl.

Not the most memorable of firm score music but pleasant enough mix of sleazy jazz & classical all the same like a cross/splice between Dr. Zhivargo meets the Thunderbirds.

Harry Palmer; while listening to a Mozart piano concerto on his radio,

 "Who is that playing the piano with his elbows?"

and in reference to the radio broadcast news article about the renowned East German concert pianist defector who had recently escaped over the Berlin Wall to the west;

"They must have paid him to leave playing like that."

I cannot stop playing this album - for me - probably the best release of 2014, certainly in the jazz space.

Dylan Howe (son of Steve) reinterpreting the music of Bowie from his Berlin period (Low/Heroes). A really atmospheric album, with some super musicianship.

Looking forward to seeing him tonight with Andy Sheppard as they play the music from this album.
