Time to Retire Home Theatre Forum?

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 29 March 2011

Thought I'd say it.

I think the AV2 and DVD5 are still at the top of their particular piles - but are looking like relics.

The nVi was a great idea, with issues.

These three are no longer with us! Naim appear to have no plans in this area; for reasons I think we can all appreciate - time to raise the draw bridge?

I think there's still interest in home theatre, so even though it's a fairly quiet room, I think it still has a place here.

Hi Richard,

I agree, I think there is masses of interest, but it appears to no longer be a focus for Naim.

Of course you could always prove me wrong and bring out the AV3 & BRX - just to spite me! ........please?

Absolutely!

Some of us are just getting into AV using Naim kit (AV2, n-Sats, n-Cent, n-Sub) so this place is an invaluable source of information.

Naim excel at supporting previous models and the forums help to play a big part in that.

I wouldn't like to see the Home Theatre disappear; this Forum's never been just about Naim anyway and both the AV2, DVD5 and Naim A/V speakers continue to be of the very best quality in comparison with more recent competition. They also reward careful implementation and those amongst us with the relevant experience have hopefully proved helpful to other Forum members who're after advice.

Plus the info on various DVD, film or music releases.

Seems to me there is just as much chat about other manufacturers AV bits and pieces, as in the SA  thread.

It may not seem to be the focus right now, but I hardly think Naim are alone here.  Indeed, most of the industry took a big bath on AV, even those whose products were prolific.  I can't blame them for fighting shy, especially such fast shifting sands as AV technology, and the legal web that has to be navigated (and paid for many times over).  The licensing situation is pretty crazy and is hugely disadvantageous to smaller scale electronics manufacturers.  So you have to be either very, very brave indeed, foolhardy  or with a very solid platform and with large-scale production (and have the odd few million £ to spare) to be in AV these days.

I know Naim would like to have something like an AV3, at the very least.  Many at Naim really enjoy what a properly designed and executed AV system can do, especially with the many concerts now available.  And that, at least, gives me hope that AV is still very much a part of Naim and its future.  But it's a risky and expensive venture whatever, so I could understand if such projects are not viewed with the urgency of others that may be seen as more relevant for now and for securing the near future, especially during uncertain times both here and overseas.

But who knows?  I'm no longer privy to a lot of Naim's plans, so we may get a nice surprise.  Certainly the AV brains are there and seem to be hard at work, so let's see what happens...

I like the positive spin you put on it Richard but I honestly fail to see how Naim can compete with some of the manufacturers out there. I would have thought that now the boat had sailed on that particular market, the R&D,the license fee's plus market value seem to make these products loss leaders for smaller companies such as Naim.

We can live in hope but its been a long long wait in hope.

Maybe Naim will surprise us and one day release one of their streaming products with video capability.

Of course what most of us really want is the AV preamp, not so much the source as sources seem to be changing faster and faster and need more and better software.

Are the licences for Dolby and DTS really that high? I mean, those two are the only two licences needed for an AV preamp, right?

I think that it is the HDMI licensing that is very expensive and absolutely not fair for small companies.

I suppose that someone knows some more on the forum and can explain to us the HDMI fee process.

As an AV2 user I would love to see an AV3 but I won't hold my breath. Please keep the AV forum.

I am using my Naim kit with a non-Naim AV receiver as a sound processor. The unity gain is an amazing feature that has allowed me to use Naim amps to drive my 5.1 setup and to maintain the naim sound.

"What DVD have you just watched" is a great thread that gives honest critique of movies and I am often introduced to great film through that thread. IMHO, this part of the forum should stay, regardless whether naim manufacture home theater gear or not.

I am a very occasional visitor to this room (and occasionally sit at the feet of the mighty TonyM, who knows his onions).

This Forum Room should definitely be kept open, if only because it spells THEATRE correctly.

We should rename it Tony M's Home Theatre Room.
