Audirvana Library

Posted by: bluesbreaker on 03 January 2015

Hi

I have a couple of pretty basic questions so please excuse my ignorance.

I'm about to install Audirvana Plus 2. This would allow me to create a library outside of iTunes. I imagine there would be advantages to the player operating as a single entity and I might try using it for a while. However, I don't want to give up on iTunes entirely and I want to check that my iTunes library would remain intact if I set up an A+ library.

I have a lot of classical and it was a chore ( to put it mildly ) cataloguing these pieces in the first place. I want to avoid doing it again if possible.

Also my files are AIFF and I have heard that tagging these outside iTunes can be problematic and can lead to some sound interference and difficulties in general. Is this true and if so is there a way to avoid this happening? Would there be any advantage in changing this file format?

Once you install the software you decide which library it will use so you can use the same library as iTunes thereby ensuring that your iTunes library is always up to date As you add and delete albums over time.  The advantage here is that the your itunes library is replayed through the Audinirvana software instead of iTunes which is how you get improved sound quality with the same database ( providing the source is high quality of course).  Of course you can ALSO set up a separate library of high quality albums which you can ALSO instruct Audinirvana to use thereby giving you the best of both worlds. Remember iTunes can store high quality albums it just can't replay them at high quality which is where Audinirvana comes in.

hope that helps?

ps there is an option in Audinirvana to link with itunes. Do not do this, if you do, the sound quality of Audinirvana is limited by itunes. Instead add the itunes library in the settings.

pps also worth remembering that Audinirvana is very CPU and memory intensive. You should have an option in the settings to switch off all non essential CPU and memory activity when the software is playing music, I recomend this option.

By using AV2, your iTunes library will not be affected, i.e. as @Voltaire says, you can choose to use the iTunes library with AV2 or AV2's library.

After evaluation of AV2.08, I have decided to keep it and use AV2 library, because it sounds better, to me, compared with AV1.5.12 and the latest version of iTunes.

I have kept my iTunes library in tact for Internet radio and as a backup (I.e. I will not add any more files to iTunes).

In respect of tagging, I haven't noticed any significant issues when I syncec my iTunes library, one or two missing album artwork.  This doesn't bother me as I can delete the AV2 library and sync again and again.

Thank you Voltaire, Jude, and Wat for your help. I would like to try A+ library and as it seems that this won't affect my iTunes one, then I will give it a go. Thanks for the tip re not linking it to iTunes as well.
