Heads Up. BBC4 TV Programme About the History of Recorded Music
Posted by: J.N. on 10 January 2015
Looking forward to that one John. Neil Brand really knows his stuff and is - as anyone who saw his series on movie music last year - a very engaging presenter.
Today's the day folks. The second episode next week, sounds very interesting too.
Bump.
John.
I saw that and put it in. I didn't realise it was the same bloke who did the movie music series. That was hugely informative, interesting and entertaining. Much more than I thought it would be. Wish I'd kept it. I will when it comes around again.
Watching this show just now. Well researched.
The book 'Perfecting sound forever, the story of recorded music' by Greg Milner covers similar ground to this programme.
Excellent programme can't wait for the next one!

Yes indeed Sir. Nice to see the said Mr Milner in the programme. Every audiophile should possess a copy of his book.

Just ordered the Milner book as I've seen it discussed here several times and it seems well regarded.
Will search my local listings for the program. Thanks John!
Yes, thanks, John. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next two episodes.
Excellent programme...'Spooning' still going round in my head.

It amazes me that an audience could not tell the difference between live and a 78 rpm recording.
Good programme, thanks John
Enjoyed the programme very much which prompted me to spin a few tunes on ye olde gramophone before moving it next to its younger counterpart for a photo!
Those old 78s have a certain magic and you can imagine the wonder that listeners had back in the day. All done with a clockwork motor and steel needle!

I wonder which would the highest value record spinner!
In monetary value definitely the Linn but in sentimental value.... maybe the gramophone?

Yes, that was obviously bull.
It was good to see the film of Bessie Smith & a young Louis Armstrong, although how incredibly frustrating that he did not play his trumpet!!!!

I need to pop up for a listen soon Mike! Alas, the 78s I used to own were all converted into fruit bowls...
Superb film. Thanks for the heads up!
I never watch TV these days, so would have missed this one!
ATB from George
I have to concur with everyone else, it was a great programme and I look forward to next Friday's episode. Brand is a very good presenter.

It is always worth checking what’s on; there is a programme about Mozart tonight, BBC 4, 9:00.
Another good series (although don't watch it if you have high blood pressure) is Jacques Peretti's The Super-Rich and Us.
It's finished now, but is still on the iPlayer.

Sorry - that should have been on the "Decent TV" thread!
If you are struggling to find this the programme title is "Sound of Song". Episode 1 on the iPlayer still.
I watched yesterday - good programme, and thanks for the tip John.
Excellent again last night. The chain of events following the invention and 'discovery' of the magnetic tape was interesting.
