As for recorded opera, I struggle with ones I haven't yet seen live, even following the libretto (lyrics) while its playing, but do enjoy those that have been 'unlocked' by having seen.
I agree that seeing an opera live is the best way to unlock its secrets. But to attend a full Ring cycle for instance can put a serious dent in the bank balance, particularly if you go for the full Wagner experience by seeing it performed at Bayreuth. But there are usually numerous DVD offerings of most of the popular operas which offer a great opportunity to watch a performance, not just listen to it. Regarding the Ring cycle, I see Barenboim's set recorded at Bayreuth is now available in the rain forest for just £20.49. I paid a lot more than that for it. It's a good version too.
I must now try to download the offering on Qobuz.
