iTunes move from iMac to Macmini. Appologies, another Howard iMac fails

Posted by: BigH47 on 21 January 2015

OK so I have the Macmini up and running. Following instructions (apple forum) for transferring iTunes from one Apple OSX device to another.

My iTunes media files live on my Server (HP Prolliant) 2 x 2TB.

So there is no media to move?  POSSIBLE error?

Next export Library selected and export selected.( on iMac)

Next import as playlist of the XML file created above (on Macmini)

Result MacMini has "My Music" with a few pod casts some music links ie radio 3 Radio Paradise.

There is a little house icon which shows "This Computer" and choice 2 My original iTunes which if I click on it shows all the covers of the music as expected and I can play music from this through DAC and system.

If I try and stop iTunes on the iMac it tells me others are sharing iTunes and if I carry on the I all iunes access.

If I look at the links for  tracks when I have access to iTunes it shows source as my iTunes title , whereas on the iMac it would show the address on the server.

Macmini also has all iTunes as a play list but  again loses it when I shut down the iMac iTunes.

I am now totally confused by this and can't fathom out how it should be.

Object is to have iTunes running only on the Macmini and using media files on server.

Am I missing/failing to comprehend something simple or indeed complicated.

is there a particular reason for wanting to import the iMacs xml library?, there maybe other options to achieve what you want after the mini is using the server media files correctly.. Playlists can be exported and recreated individually for example

I just spotted in the HDX thread HH saying the HDX should be a device not shared does this apply to my potential set up? Macmini is seen as shared in iMac Finder.

I have spotted that when I screen share and access Macmini it shows iTunes as a name not as the iMac the location on the server , even though the MM is looking in the same server location.

I can't edit anything in iTunes either with the MM.

BigH - it's been mentioned several times in the thread. You're MM iTunes is looking at the shared iTunes library on your iMac. If you turn off iTunes on your iMac the MM won't find the library. This function allows one computer (in this case your iMac) to manage the library and allow other Macs to share that library - play music but not edit, add to the library.

I guess I'm looking for the other way around then? MacMini controlling, others  sharing that then?

Yep..

you can disable home sharing under iTunes preferences or switch off the iMac..

i the more I think about it, importing the xml iMac library file is the issue as it's taking the path from that. I would get itunes on the mini working with the server first and worry about the xml import later as it may not be required depending on the info you replicating on the mini..by not importing the xml you would loose playlists and ratings but the can be recreated.
