Unusuable Naim app

Posted by: ColinD on 22 January 2015

I wonder if anyone can help me here? Having saved hard for many months for my first dip into the world of Naim, I'm now the proud owner of a UnitiLite. And it's magnificent. However, the app, is totally useless as it stands, on my ipad mini and iphone 5. It worked for a while but now it can't find my Unitilite whatsoever and I can't move beyond the "Streamer Not Responding" message or the "Find Rooms" screen. I've done some research and it appears that people think it's to do with IOS8. I've switched on and off the UnitiLite and both iphone and Ipad. And I've tried manually inputting the UnitiLite's name and IP address. Still nothing. The app just simply doesnt work.. and yet it did for a week after first set up.

I'm very disappointed having spent all this money and don't know how to resolve the issue. One of the selling points was the incredible app. Also,  I'm brand new to streaming audio and don't really know how to get the best from my system as yet.

So my questions are..

1. Could anyone advise me on how to get the app to recognise my UnitiLite again?

2. I tried using the Nserve app but it doesnt have cd player function (I use mainly cds). Is there another app I can use?

3. I've noticed that sound quality over Bluetooth is quite poor. Is there a way to play music from my ipad/phone over Upnp?

All advice for this newbie gratefully received.

Colin

Hi Colin,   there is no reason for the app not to see the UL provided its set up right.

1st the easy one, nServe is not the app you need,  its for HDX & U.Serve only.

Next I would go back to basics with IP addresses & make sure your broadband/wireless router, iPad/Pod/Phones & UL are all set for DHCP.

Switch them all off & finally switch off (power off) the wireless hub.

Wait 2 or 3 mins & restart first the wireless hub,  once its gone thru its complete start sequence,  then turn on the UL followed by the other stuff.

That may or may not get you back to UL discovery, but whatever  some more questions

What is the wireless hub?

How is it all connected up - wired, part wired or all wireless?

Where is the music stored?.

Welcome Colin.  Mike, of course, asked the right questions.  This is almost surely a factor of how you have the UnitiLite on your home network, and what bits of hardware make up your home network.  Please write up a paragraph about the network -- which router, etc., and how everything is connected together.

The good thing is that there are lots of folks here who will enjoy helping you sort this out!

I was ready to take a sledgehammer to my Superuniti over networking issues I didn't understand. Fortunately, some good advice from my dealer and this forum provided a better solution. Stick with it, and you'll soon get things sorted.

Regarding iPhones, Bluetooth, etc - none of this is ever going to sound very good. To get the most out of your Naim gear, you'll want at least CD quality music files, preferably on a NAS drive with UPnP.

I had the same issue bur with my Sonos. The solution was to have my iPad forget its wifi connection and re-join the network. Once I did that it was able to connect. Issue was something around IP conflicts.

Changing IP addresses can be a bad experience unless you know what you're doing.

So per my previous post = K.I.S.,   reset everything back to DHCP.

Thankyou all LOADS for all this helpful advice.. My apologies for taking a couple of days to reply. My father in-law sadly passed away very recently so I've been v pre-occupied.

im using the Unitilite for cd and radio mainly and I do not have a Nas drive as yet. So i've literally just using the app as a convenient remote so far. Ive also bluetoothed from my ipad whilst playing from Spotify, purely just to get a feel for albums before buying on cd. Once Spotify Premium offers cd quality or higher then I'll probably stop buying cds and switch to Spitify Premium or another servive offering hi-res music. Im aware that bluetooth will not sound very good which is why I've been wondering if I can play from my ipad or phone using UPNP. Like I say, I'm totally new to streaming so Im feeling my way And one day I'll switch completely to streaming once the quality matches cd and it becomes the norm.

my unitilite is in the front room and BT homehub 3.0 and BT Openreach router are about 20 feet away in a bedroom.

The good news is that the app on both ipad and iphone is now connecting with the Unitilite. Its been switched off for 3 days whilst i've been away, and upon switching on again tonight the apps now work fine. Hopefully this is all I'll have to do should the app collapse on me again. Im also now armed with all that advice above from you helpful fellas.

Thanks again,Colin

Hi Colin, and my condolences.  Family is more important than hi fi

I know of no way to use UPnP to serve files stored on an iPhone/iPad.  UPnP requires a server, which is really just a program running on a device attached to your network that will communicate with a UPnP player (which your UnitiLite is).  Devices that can run a UPnP server include your home PC, a Mac, a nas, Naim's UnitiServe and HDX, etc.  I don't think that anyone's ever written a UPnP server to run on an iOS device, nor do I know if such is possible.

In general, an iOS device is not a great storage device for music to be played over a home hi fi.  The best thing to do is to plug the iOS device directly into the front panel usb input when you want to use that as a source.
