Netgear ReadyNas Firmware Bug

Posted by: trickydickie on 25 January 2015

Just a warning to any fellow forum members who use the newer Netgear ReadyNas devices (Rn102/104 etc.)

There is a firmware bug whereby if you uninstall an application on the NAS it fails and renders access to the web gui impossible. Reboots are futile and the only way to resolve this is to either do a factory reset or arrange for Netgear to access the device in a special recovery mode.

It happens with the latest 6.2.x releases of the firmware. It is resolved in version 6.2.3 which is in beta.

This happened to me over the weekend and fortunately was able to resolve this with the kind help of a Netgear member of staff in Australia who is active on their forums.

I have had exactly that happen to me.  I had to reinstall the OS using a paper clip in the back of the unit.

It's a nasty bug.

The NAS has a special mode that you can put it in using a paperclip to access the boot menu. The display then shows a 5 digit code which you give to Netgear which allows them to access the device. The resolution is simple, all that is required is the removal of a symbolic link which is stopping Apache from starting.

If you have SSH enabled you can do this yourself, but alas I didn't so had to go down the more complex route. I have now enabled SSH and will avoid uninstalling any applications until the next firmware release.

There are quite a few threads on the Netgear forum regarding this.
