New Unitiqute user advice?
Posted by: Johnny1976 on 26 January 2015
Hi all,
I have just taken delivery of my UnitiQute (Mki 192 version), so far I am delighted with it (it replaced my prior MacMini-->Arcam Dac-->Primare A30 setup)
I have gotten everything setup so far, but am awaiting deliverly of my rs232 adapter in order to update the Firmware and use the App, so I am still in the "remote control only" domain when it comes to usage of the unit!
I've currently got two powerpc based macs which I can configure as UPnP servers (my macmini and my imac) and both are serving up great sounding tunes via EyeConnect....
The UPnP feature was the main attraction of this unit over the likes of a NAD D7050 as it will be situated in the drawing room, and for SWMBO, one subtle box is a huge win!
I have been trawling through the posts on here to get forewarned of potential issues and to ensure I'm optimised in my setup, but a lot of the discussions in this area date back to a couple of years ago.
Just wondering if the lay of the land has changed significantly with the new firmware/app? Or do most of the caveats apply still (what worries me most is the potential artwork foibles with Mac and connection instability)
I'm also wondering if file structure in the folder containing my ALAC files is important when I begin using the App, as it stands now navigation of the current structure using the remote control and UnitiQute display is sub-optimal! I'm also occasionally getting connection issues via UPnP but I have that chalked up to the antiquity of the hardware involved!!
Apologies if I have completely missed a FAQ or sticky which addresses these questions, but I think I've done a fairly comprehensive search!
Many thanks in advance
Johnny

The app will work fine with older firmware, so you don't need the latest. You won't get Spotify until you've done the firmware upgrade, but UPNP, iRadio, etc should all be fine via the app. When you do the upgrade make sure you follow the instructions closely - most problems seem to occur when people don't.
In terms of UPNP software, Asset seems to work very well on a Mac, so you might have a look at that, although I'm sure Eyeconnect is fine too - I haven't used it.
The UQ and the app see what the UPNP server presents to them - they won't follow the folder/file structure unless you're using Folder view. In general, the UPNP software will use the 'metatags' contained within the ALAC files themselves to resolve the album/artist/etc. In theory, you could store all your music in a single folder and as long as the metatags were correct it would present ok - but I wouldn't advise it :-) All this means that different UPNP software will present slightly different views and hierarchies, though generally they're fairly sensible/obvious and you get used to the one you use. Again, Asset is very good.
The UQ is a wonderful little machine, so enjoy your new purchase and welcome to the forum!

Hello Johnny
The standard reply to these sorts of questions is that the Naim app will show what the uPnP server software presents to it. So provided the server software (EyeConnect) in your case can handle the folder structure you have and find the artwork then you should be fine.
I got started with streaming using EyeConnect on a Mac and I found it very frustrating - not stable, frequent drop outs, frequent need to restart the app, etc etc.
Its OK as a starting place, but if your experience is like mine you will fairly quickly find it too frustrating to tolerate. When you get to that point I strongly recommend you get a NAS with uPnP server (plenty of recommendations in the threads on here - QNAP and Synology seem to be the most popular NAS vendors).

Thanks lads....
I had thought that the FW had to be up to date for the new app? (I'm on 3.16.00)
I downloaded the app, but it can't see the unitiqute...
I have a feeling a NAS maybe on the cards too!
At the moment, the uq is even picking up the" album art" folder when browsing!
Cheers
Johnny
ps the manual says DHCP, what's the consensus? fixed ip or dhcp
Posted on: 26 January 2015 by Solid Air
I don't use fixed IP and it's fine, but I know other people find it necessary - not sure what the difference is.
3.16 is quite old. Maybe the app really won't work. . . . Although I hadn't heard there was an issue. Make sure the Ipad or whatever is on the same network as the Qute. If it still won't find it, turn each element off and on again and try again. I'm pretty sure it should find it.
Btw you may need to apply the upgrades to the Qute one at a time. Not sure, worth checking.

all good!
I had assumed that as my FW wasn't up to date that that was why the app couldn't see the UQ....
manually entered the ip and up she popped...!!
what a massive improvement over itunes remote!!
one or two artwork issues which may take fixing.... I'm sure all the answers are one here somewhere...

No need to update firmware incrementally. Just update to the latest straight away.
Welcome to the wonderful Qute club. Don't listen to the bigger boys who will tell you to get more and bigger boxes....

This wasn't the one on the that big auction site for $700 perhaps? Oh what a deal. I almost pushed click myself as my version 1 doesn't have the upgraded hardware. Not that I even have any hi-res tracks....

hi charles,
No, I couldn't buy hifi from that large auction site....
Bought on a little hifi forum we have here in Ireland, all of which originates from our one and only old school hifi shop who started the forum many moons ago.....

App works great on my original Qute 24/96 woohoo!

just make sure your album art is called folder.jpg for some reason it needs to be this to be picked up.
definitely get a NAS as it would save you having to run a mac/laptop, just use the app on a controller. sit back and enjoy

Thanks lads,
I think I may have jumped teh gun on having succesfull artwok in one location in the app and not another...
On mature reflection, it would appear that the "Album Info" view in the second link
http://s1342.photobucket.com/u...zpsvhvvhtyu.png.html Is unrelated to the artwork stored in the location which EyeConnect is streaming, it would appear to be sourced directly from teh internet by the UQ, as some of the artwork rendered here is copmpletely different to the versions I have, and some of the information retrieved is just plain vanilla wrong...!!
(e.g. Vivaldi's Stabat Mater in both track lsiting and folder structure, the UQ in album view thinks is the London Cast recording of Annie Get Your gun!!)

Seems unlikely the UQ is getting any info straight from the net, as it just presents what the server gives it. It could be that either the app or the server are getting the info.
Whether it helps in this instance or not, I've found that in a lot of cases, things like wrong artist displaying etc. have been fixed for me by clearing the app's cache(s). This has been especially useful for times when the wrong albums/tracks show up when viewing by album/artist.
Settings>other settings>clear image cache and settings>inputs>upnp>clear upnp cache. Worth a try anyway, only takes a sec.

yes, you're right of course...
By UQ I was referring to the playback chain including the App, as I'm certain I don't own Annie Get Your Gun!!!!
It makes more sense that the App is sourcing the info including reviews and credits (which is my favourite feature of the app so far...)

The album artwork and info you're looking at is from the Rovi database that the app uses, so in this case, it is coming from the internet rather than your server. That explains why you sometimes see different artwork there, although it doesn't explain why you got 'Annie Get Your Gun!'

Johnny ,
Having just bought an ex demo Qute 2 , I have been on a steep learning curve but have finally sorted it out and got the unit and my library just as I like it .
I invested in a copy of Metadatics , which is really easy to use and it sorted out my missing album art issues along with correcting tagging issues which were messing up the way albums were displayed .

A program such as Bliss is good too. It will automatically put your music in the correct file path etc. The cost of software to make those tasks easier is minimal compared to the cost of the hardware - and to the cost of pulling your hair out.

Hi Johnny,
Welcome. The firmware update is quite easy to do; I did mine from a MacBook Air; it seems to do the firmware updates sequentially, though you may need to 'make it go' each time. But it worked as advertised. There are plenty of UPnP gremlins, but on balance, the latest Naim app seems pretty stable and reliable. It still sometimes can't find the streamer, or just locks up and I need to quit the iPhone or iPad app, and that resets things.
I do wish Naim had a guide for the settings, such as 'stay connected' and 'UPnP Compatibility Mode'. It is not an intuitive relationship between name and function.
Album artwork is another wild variable, but the UQ is an excellent piece of equipment.

I've tried renaming the Album Artwork folder in the iTunes area as Album Artwork.jpg, but no joy yet!

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately its only for Intel based macs, and I don't have one to spare as a server just now!

Just call it folder. You don't need to add the .jpg.

IF you're the kind of guy who loves solving puzzles & doing jig-saw's you should use fixed IPs.
or
If you prefer a quiet life where stuff just works without you fiddling with it, use DHCP.
OR
if you live anywhere near Chester, are £loaded and will happily call out an IT support guy* to fix your problems, use fixed IP addresses.
(IT support guy* = me
)
I hope I have provided sufficient guidance for you to make an informed choice, Johnny.
Best,
Roger

Thanks Rob,
I've tried using static IPs but my ISP appears to preclude them.....

Are you using a browser to access the settings on your ISP supplied router? If so, there should be a section for LAN settings where you can allocate fixed IP addresses to any device on your network. I thought they all had this functionality, but I could be wrong...
