Music Servers...Spoilt for choice?
Posted by: The Meerkat on 30 January 2015
At present, I am using PLEX Media Server. I have configured it to display three separate folders, 16bit Rips, 24bit Downloads, and iTunes. I thought I would try Minim, which is bundled as an app, in the Qnap app Centre. I personally didn't get on with Minim, as all my compilation albums were fragmented all over the place. Also, it displayed wrong artwork, no artwork, and a quite a few albums that it didn't recognise.
I am now trying a 30 day trial of Asset. Same problems as above with Minim. I have attempted to configure Minim and Asset, just to simply display my three folders, which are stored on the music share of the Qnap.
Can the above be done?
(When I first demoed my ND5, my dealer used his Synology to serve the music. He had his music displayed in separate folders, which is where I got the idea from)
I too found that my library was a bit messy when I started using Minimserver and when I first looked at the Log it all seemed Greek but I spent a couple of hours with Metadatics sorted everything out . It now looks really good on the Naim app .
Yes it is a bit OCD in it's approach to how it reads your library but the log tells you what is wrong ( or what it does not like ) but once it is all sorted it is quick and you know your data is tagged perfectly !
As far as splitting up your libraries in to folders , try using Minim Watch . I , like you have a Qnap but run Minim Watch on my Mac which allows me to control the server and also allows you to specify additional folders . I think there are some restrictions ( each folder may have to be a share rather than in the same share ) .
when opening minim properties you have contentDir option, there you can add aditional folders to scan.
when using Naim app and choosing minim upnp server there is an option of [folder view] and there you will see all your scanned minim folders like shown by PLEX.
but take into considuration that you need to build those folders in advance and add it one by one to contentDir
Soooo....why not continue to use Plex then?

Because this is the Naim forum , all options must be tried or upgraded !!
"I'll get me coat"
A***!!
If your compilation albums are being split, it is because they are incorrectly tagged.
Now you might say the Plex gets it right, only because it lumps everything with the same album title as one, so an album 'Greatest Hits' might contain 5 different albums all blended. Asset takes the route that albums are identified as an album + artist, unless there is a compilation tag set (an album artist can group the album together also).

Thanks for that info mrspoon. I can understand that if it were one artist, like 'Queens Greatest Hits', but quite a few compilations use the term 'Various Artists'.
Mr Meerkat, with such albums, if you want them to appear as a single album, just make sure the compilation box is ticked in the metadata screen when ripping. Often this will be automatically set by by the metadata source provider, but it is work checking.
It can also be edited at a later date by highlighting all the media files (with the same album title) using what ever meta data editor you use and then make sure the Compilation tag has a value of '1' against it.
When rescanned using Asset, voila, the compilation should appear as one album.

Thanks Simon. I appreciate it's probably 'A*** about face', but I have created a library in PLEX called 'Compilations'. I then called the artist, 'Various Artists". I then put all the compilation albums there. It works well with the Naim app.
Well if it works...
Well if it works...
I just tried to insert a picture of it, but it just wont load correctly! The one's worked ok above?
It's going to be the tags. Past that it's just a case of looking until you find what is either missing or inaccurately rendered. If you chose a small group of problem albums and take it from there it usually works out. Or you can continue to use use Plex. I'm using Mininserver and it all works beautifully. All my CDs were originally ripped by HDX so when I went for a NAS based server I had to do all the tags myself. Minimserver just picked them up first time and I learnt a new (to me) tag which helped me to correctly group multi album sets. It's all in the Minimserver Help section.
In your situation I'd just use Plex. It ain't broke.

Totally agree Harry.
I appreciate this particular forum may no be the place to ask this question, but normally I can just drag a .jpg photo into the message box, as I've done previously, but this no longer works for me. As soon as I hit 'Submit Reply', the box is empty! What's occuring?
