SuperUniti + KEF 203/2 (old reference 3)

Posted by: JNANESHWAR on 30 January 2015

I need inputs if SuperUnit which says 80W/Ch 8ohms can drive KEF 203/2 (old Reference 3) which has a spec of 200W/Ch on 8 Ohms.

If this does not work then I will have to take the NDS5XS + NAP 250 or higher which suits the speakers AMP (feel free to suggest which one)

I've looked up the KEF 203/2 specs, it quotes a sensitivity of 89db@1watt-1metre with it best suited to amps that deliver 50 - 200 watts per channel.

I don't see any reason why the Superuniti would struggle to drive them, though adding a NAP 250 might be a worthwhile upgrade.

Dear Magicaxeman

Thanks for the input. elsewhere I was told it is good to have amp power equal to max power of the Speaker to expose more details etc. Anyways looking into more details the SU or NAP250 Max power consumption goes to 400VA although it says 80W/Ch. the main electronics should not consume much (40W maybe?) so where does the remaining power go?. so 400W - 80x2(speaker) 40W (all electronics) = 200W still left ?.

Naim, do they under rate power definition or is it a true rating which matters etc?. So i m reading other manufacturer no names (all decent big guys) when I read Power to Speaker quotes 230W/Ch or more failed to show up total power consumed. One UK manuf showed 200W/Ch also quoted max power consumed is 500W.

Am I bothering too much into it or is there true engineering ?.

Thank you once again Need to audition the exact set up to understand.

My current set up B&W 685 + AVR receiver (made mistake) - SOLD!.

Speakers : KEF 203/2 (old) + Electronics on look out.

You are bothering too much - my SU easily drives my very large multi way floorstanders (Monitor Audio GR60s). There are some on the Forum who are not fans of the SU but I don't recall anyone saying they had trouble driving any speakers due to lack of power. The only way for you is to try it for yourself but I would be astonished if the SU struggled.

There is a big difference between what 400W and 400VA can be.

An example:

You can have 2 differents amps each giving 2x80W.

The first amps maximum power consumption is 200VA, the SU 400VA.

The funny part is that if the KEF's needs 2x40W (40W for each channel), it could easely be that the amps need to deliver 300VA...

If so, no need to further explain that the SU will be able to drive the speakers. The other one not at all.

Pev - Thanks for sharing info on Monitor Audio. saw the specs - sounds good.

Saw some folks dont favor SU, else where in the forums - Happily Ignored

Ken - Thank! This is exactly what I was looking for. 400W will have best case 0.7PF (=280VA). But 400VA is pure power. Hence I was looking for answers that SU has extra muscle to support additional 210VA (assuming 30VA towards other electronics)

[160 (80x2) + 30 + 210 = 400] - is this stupid calculations ?

did not understand your comment on.

"The funny part is that if the KEF's needs 2x40W (40W for each channel), it could easely be that the amps need to deliver 300VA..."

FYI - KEF max requirement is 200W/ch.

Otherwise I m done with decision towards SU.

BTW my KEFs 203/2 Reference are brand new but old series. I could manage some discount and getting them tomorrow. Can wait to close on electronics.

Currently borrowed other manuf Integrated amp (with Wolfson Dac) until i get SU / Electronics.
