Rush HD New Masters & Vinyl
Posted by: Frizzlefry on 01 February 2015
Just to confirm, the 'new' Rush vinyl & downloads, to be released this year, are new remasters.
'Fly by night' is the first of the downloads, and it is NOT the same as the previous 'Sectors' sourced release. Better sound quality, with higher DR values for those who care about such things. By-Tor... is also extended, with the bell tree at the end continuing for around 1 minute.
Word of warning, the new blu-ray is still the Sectors mix, not the new remaster, however in the US, it comes with a token to download the new HD version.
Very interesting, I wasn't interested, having bought all their albums as 24 bit downloads over the last six months but if they do a cd or download of a different version of Fly by Night I may well purchase as I love that album

Fly By Night came out this past week on HDTracks.COM , but no sign of it in the UK/EU yet. Maybe because they are Mercury releases, and not the UK vertigo label?
These new '40th' mixes were done by the same team behind the Beatles 2009 remasters, at Abbey road. They plan to release everything from 'Fly By Night' to 'Show of Hands' ( The Mercury releases) over the next 12 months.
Yes, cannot get most albums in HD, and Rush are already on to double dips.
This is very interesting. Thank you for the heads up. It has a potential to become confusing but I'm sure we'll stay on track.
As far as 'Fly by Night' is concerned, besides sound quality & the DR figures, the easy way to tell them apart is the end of By-Tor.. it runs for 9:32, with the extra minute being the extended bell sounds at the end.
Not sure if there is a CD anywhere, at the moment, but the HDtracks 2015 download, and the new vinyl release in the US is this master. The Blu-ray is not, and the 'box-set' downloads are the Sectors mixes. The UK vinyl should be this master, but the download code with it, if the same as the US release, is for a vinyl rip MP3, not the 24bit download.
Time to wait a month or three to see what happens to 2112, Permanent Waves and Moving Pitchers (if not the last one, Google it)
So far the sound quality wasn't always that great - so I keep my fingers crossed as I only had the sd version with a couple of exception which I got from a friend...
I thought they did some good work on the 24bit stuff released to date but they were a bit "hot". Much obliged for the By-Tor info. I'll be having a punt with my next HDT discount code.
The new vinyl pressing of Fly By Night is very good - the best remaster of the album I've heard so far. The vinyl is perfectly flat and dead quiet (after a run thru the Okki Nokki). The bell tree at the end of By-Tor is a lock-out groove on the vinyl (was it this way on the original? I don't have a good copy.).
I highly recommend picking it up and the price here in the U.S. was very reasonable for the quality of the packaging and vinyl, especially compared to some other recent high profile remasterings.
This release and last year's release of the first album ("Rush") bode well for a great 2015 for Rush fans, especially on vinyl.
"The bell tree at the end of By-Tor is a lock-out groove on the vinyl (was it this way on the original?"
It's on my vinyl copy.
The new vinyl Fly By Night sounds absolutely fantastic. Flat, quiet, punchy, dynamic and hugely enjoyable. Only £17 from my local independent record shop too :-)

+1
I was trying not to be so effusive in my snapshot review above, but Keith is correct. These really are must-haves for the Rush fan that enjoys vinyl.
I also like the idea of spacing out the release dates. Even though I will spend more than a box would have cost in the end, it will make the next 12 months very enjoyable. I just really wish they would have included a hi-res download code with the vinyl...
No suitable HDT code today. When one turns up I'll pass it on.
Hi Mark,
Yep, I'll be buying them one by one over the coming year. I agree that it's nice to spread the fun over a longer period, rather than the glut of music you get with a box set. Hi res downloads would be nice, but I suppose the price would go up.
Keith
Frizzle fry, thanks for the info on the download version of Fly by Night. I will get it soon. I did pick up the vinyl and agree it is very good. I only had the 'Archives' version to compare it to as my regular version and excellent Holland pressed copies were at the store and I haven't compared them yet. It didn't totally blow away my 'Archives' version. This has always been a fine sounding album. If anything, though very natural sounding, the new pressing doesn't sound as lively as the 'Archives' pressing. Consider the acoustic guitar of "In the End". I'm just wondering about the age of the masters. And yet with how amazing the new Beatles mono vinyls are, that doesn't necessarily mean they are 'tired'.
I was unimpressed with the original Rush vinyl. It definitely did not have the energy of my 70s copy. The new copy sounds a little too sedated. Not the brash debut that I have come to love.
But I am one who really likes the original Vapor Trails and finds the remixed version to completely suck although there is certainly new things to hear on the new version that make it worth the listen. It just isn't as cathartic the new way. Plus in Ceiling Unlimited they move where they punch in Geddy's lyric by four bars and ruins the tension that is built up and released the original way. How does that happen?
I too with they had a coupon to get the Digital version tucked into the vinyl. How many times are they going to get me to purchase this same ****ing awesome music? Haven't the die hard fans who are going to buy the vinyl copies already bought this music several times over during the last 40 years?
So I am very excited for the repressings and hope some great versions come out of it but I thought I had read that they really didn't have some of the original masters or original tracking or something. Maybe it was of Permanent Waves? Can't remember. I still think my original version of Permanent Waves is the best sounding. I have the mo-fi reissue. Sounds nice but again doesn't quite have the harmonic tunefulness and energy of the original. I do have some other standard copies of that album that are really bright and bad. I know where some get the opinion that it is a bad sounding album if that is what they have heard.
Way too much time spent on this silliness. Wish I didn't care so much.
Anyone have tickets for the US tour this summer? Maybe their last big one? I want to see them at an outdoor venue but very few shows are at them. The show in Seattle is at Key Arena. Would prefer the Gorge.

The 24/192 version is a case of swings and roundabouts for me. The drums are bigger and more 3D. The vocals are more 3D. The bass is lower in the mix and not so in focus. And of course, the mix is slightly different from the Sector mixes, which are the ones I now have on the NAS. I'd call it a draw. It's not my most listened to Rush album. 2112 is going to be the next interesting one for me. The deluxe 24bit version is a cracker so it will be interesting.
Wondered where it had got to....
Rush 'Rush' is now released as a new re-mastered download, same as 'Fly by Night', 24-96 or 24-192, and dated 2015. Not bought this one yet, but give it time..
Connon, be happy they are touring near you. No sign of s uk tour the new downloads being available here yet
I'm in the UK and I have had no trouble downloading the new remix of Fly By Night. Rush is also up for grabs today but I won't be buying this one. 2122 is up next for me.

From which site Harry?
Qobuz's French site. They lift the IP block on request. I also was offered it by Pro Studio Masters. I didn't (obviously) buy it from the latter but it looked like the transaction was likely to go through. I use the Hola Chrome add on for HDTracks dot com.
Pro Studio Masters currently have a store wide discount code GRAMMYS of 15% but it's time limited.

Thanks Harry. I suppose I will have to buy even though I've bought all the previous 24 bit releases over the past twelve months
LOL! Singing to the choir.
It's hopeless but harmless.
It seems to be on the UK Qoboz site for £15.56.
Keith
Have the 24/192 Fly by Night in AIFF but only have it in iTunes on my Air listening through Grado SR80e so far.
Sounds really nice. But I'm not sure I'm hearing the whole file as the Audio MIDI Setup on the Mac only goes up to 24/96. There may be even more goodness?
This has me pretty excited for the rest of them. Especially Caress of Steel.
