Naim App

Posted by: nickpeacock on 04 February 2015

Mostly venting steam here, but if this wretched app loads one more full album when I try press the three dots (...) to queue a single track I shall explode...

It was always counterintuitive and I've pretty much had enough.

There,  said it.

Amen.

If you press the right three dots, it works perfectly well.  Maybe you should remember which three dots to press??  We're not launching rockets to Mars here -- just playing music.  It works.

+1       It works for me  . . .

Tried it a few times tonite to check, I did find touching the track area does not always every time launch that one track;   but the three dots  -  play from this track. - play this track  -  worked OK

Ditto.....

Both views are true.

If you press the right buttons it works, but it's Mr Peacock hit the nail in the head with 'wretched'.

Naim should stick to the soldering iron and get someone else to do the software.  I've just had a bigger vent in another post - now I'm reading reviews on Linn Exakt, that's how irritating I find the app.

I maybe on sticky ground here but I always found LINN's Kinsky app really good as you have a split screen with a play list one side and your library on the other. Just click either the album of track and it clearly moves over to the play list.

So so simple and easy to add or delete tracks

Just as you can on nStream (Although in this case jou just swipe right to see the queue).

Must admit I've never had much of a problem using nStream with a range of Naim network products from original NaimUniti to NDS, but if the OP is really struggling, he could always try downloading the Kinksy app and driving his Naim's playback using that if the interface appeals to him more.

Jus' sayin'...

Didn't know you could drive a Naim streamer with something other than n-stream.  Will try Kinsky the next time I'm with the SuperUniti.  Thanks for the tip.

It may not be just the Naim app. I never had a problem until I upgraded my iPad to iOS 8

Now, nothing works properly any more. Including Naim app. I have deleted it and downloaded again for the fourth time!

working again, for the moment.

If the app works for you, that's great.

But at the risk of stating the obvious, if it worked for me I wouldn't have posted. I'm not a technophobe and I have reasonably slender fingers. And thanks, but I know which ... to press. I beta tested the ios version and made the point that the notion of pressing one track to load a whole album is counterintuitive.

Maybe it's my new Android phone, maybe it's the android version of naim's app.

And maybe, just maybe, the Naim app ain't so good... There's a long current thread elsewhere making the same point.

Anyway, I've reverted to n-stream on a ipod touch which can't download the new app. It works.

Kinksy won't drive Naim hardware correctly, they use the UPnP command messages in a different way (I've tried it).

Some of the 'generic' apps can do it, but Kinksy won't.

Posted on: 08 February 2015 by Harry

Would you please mention some of these generic apps? I'm interested in testing alternatives to the Naim app and my admittedly limited research hasn't thrown up any candidates. I don't care much about volume and mute because these are not ubiquitously available in the Naim app, so I always have the remote handy.

I've successfully used Windows Media Player on Windows 7.

N.B. it doesn't work on Windows 8.x as the Win 8.x Media Library UPnP isn't DLNA 1.5 compliant.

I haven't tried Foobar2000 yet, but that should also work.

I do intend to try some others on my laptop over the coming week or two.

You're pressing the wrong "button."  As counter-intuitive as it may be, which I shall not debate, if you want to play a single track, press the . . . three dots next to the track and pick "play this track."  Or "queue next," or any of the other single-track options.

I had the same issue when the app was first released.  I too thought that pressing just the track name would play just the track.  But once I learned otherwise . . . I took a deep cleansing breath . . . and have not had issues since.

Thanks Huge. Much appreciated.

Harry, Huge , JRiver Media Center directly drives a Naim ND player as well.

Posted on: 08 February 2015 by Huge

Thanks Simon, it's good to have alternatives.

The "Thinking of Abandoning..." megathread seems to completely missed this possibility (or more correctly the main protagonists seem to have refused to consider it - oh well! their loss).

I'm currently using the remote (or rather a Logitech Harmony), but I'm interested in putting some of the various internet screaming options on my laptop and connecting that to the main system.  Currently looking at the possibility of connecting the Laptop HDMI to an S/PDIFF input on the ND5 XS.  This way I can keep up with the rapidly changing streaming services without the time delay for device specific support (if it ever comes!).

Can you elaborate?  JRiver server + JRemote on an iOS device?  I assume both are required??

Posted on: 08 February 2015 by Simon-in-Suffolk

Huge, indeed.. However none of the alternatives I have come across can switch inputs or control a NAC's volume which is really rather handy... And neat.

Bart, I use J River on my Mac book pro only.. I don't know if there is an iOS variant... Sorry

Simon

Posted on: 08 February 2015 by sjbabbey

You can indeed use JRemote on an iPad. The only drawback to JRiver is that it cannot run on a NAS and has to run on a computer.

Actually this is what my local dealer does -- they run JRiver on a PC and use the JRiver iOS app for playback to all their devices incl. Naim players.  I just remembered that!  They don't use the Naim App; they use JRiver.

Oh for goodness sake, Bart, I give up. Seriously.
