Alternatives to Radio Paradise?

Posted by: Gavin B on 06 February 2015

I like Radio Paradise.  I especially like the fact that there's hardly any interruption from the 'DJ' and hardly any adverts.

Are there any other similar iRadio stations, perhaps with a rockier musical bent, for me to try?

Have you tried Classic Rock Lounge? UK based internet station, you can find them in the UK list of stations or  here: http://www.classicrocklounge.com. Only on 192k though.

+1

Excellent station!

Pinguin Radio @320Kb/s MP3.  They ditch the jazz, classical, country and folky numbers and have a greater bias towards indie and rock music.

Similar to Paradise, there's not much chat just the occasional recorded "Pinguin Radio, No Bullshit, Great Music" type stuff.

Saturday nights seems to be a live event with an interview and accompanied with relevant, selected, music but as the interview is in Dutch they could be talking about anything!

I switch between Paradise and Pinguin, and these are the two station I mainly listen to due to the 320 quality.

To find Pinguin browse to radio stations by nationality,

Netherlands > Alternative > Pinguin Radio.

Thanks, Bonner & Meerkat - I'll have a look for Classic Rock Lounge

Jota - Pinguin is one of my favourites too, although they sometimes have a DJ on (on a Saturday?)

I also listen to Circle City Radio - from somewhere obscure in the US.  The quality isn't high but it's good for older rock.

Pinguin is great. Not much dad rock.

I should stress that I'm definitely not looking for 'dad rock' (even though I am a dad!)

Is there any blues syation with good quality i mean 320 quality

Posted on: 19 February 2015 by ChrisH

Thanks for raising this topic Gavin B.

I hadn't heard of Pinguin before, but I will also give that a go.

The Linn stations are high bit stream and can be very enjoyable if you are in the mood for what they offer, but I always end up coming back to my 'comfort' stations Radio Paradise and BBC 6 Music.

I find these days that my problem if not listening to my own collection, is exactly what to listen to (can be very mood dependant) and where to listen to it from.

There is just so much choice these days it makes it very difficult.

They say choice is a good thing!

Thats the great thing about the forum - the tips from others.

What is dad rock as opposed to general rock ?

Posted on: 20 February 2015 by Gavin B

The stuff today's 50 year olds still listen to from their early years

Posted on: 20 February 2015 by BigH47

"Dad rock" OK so it's meant to be a derogatory term, but I spend a lot more time talking to my 30+ year old about, LZ, RUSH, Hendrix etc than we do about so called newer bands that bananahead seems to imply we should listen to.

Mind you his "groups" aren't actually brand new either. Muse,FF, RHCP etc.

SO maybe it's that the newer bands don't cut it or maybe those "next generation" bands are now Dadrock as their listeners have now begun to breed?

OR is it just that these new bands just don't make music as well as the earlier ones do?  Of course that's not a very cool outlook.

Just as well that their isn't a genre for great great great great + grandfather music?

Oh dear.

I'll start with what I meant.

Dad Rock. A large amount of older people have the "music was so much better in my youth" attitude. When you ask them what their top ten albums are they will produce a list from 50 to 30 years ago. They usually say that there hasn't been any good music released this century. There is nothing wrong with this. Lot's of people have closed minds.

Radio Paradise plays a mixture of music from the last 50 years and therefore includes a lot of dad rock. I listen to it a lot.

Pinguin Radio mostly plays music that is more up to date, dare I say current. I listen to it a lot.

And now we get to what my "groups" are. I have no idea where the Muse, FF, RHCP list came from. Certainly not from me.

I don't listen to Muse at all.

I have a small collection of RHCP (I even had to think what RHCP actually might be) and they aren't a favourite.

FF ( Franz Ferdinand I suppose) formed in 2002. Great band.

However, what I am excited about is that there is a new Best Coast album soon. And I am really liking Courtney Barnett and Ex Hex at the moment. All three are more likely to feature on Pinguin.

I'm going with Foo Fighters for FF....

I took BigH47 to mean that his 30-year old son's groups are also old, an so perhaps in the "new dad" rock category, thus pushing his own list into "granddad" territory?!?

i like Radio Paradise and have purchased more new bands / CDs from there than from the New Release list on Spotify. Feels more like a "genre" issue to me than a release date thing... RP has a groove to it that evolves slowly, includes prog rock, indie rock, more modern takes on acoustic singer-songwriter stuff, etc. CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, our BBC) has a great set of iRadio playlists, but I am not sure they are available internationally. CBC Radio 2 in particular has a nice overnight stream of newer releases in this sort of groove / genre suite.

Regards, alan

Oh yes that makes sense. I suppose a 30something would have grown up with those bands.

Yes RP is very listenable and I agree that if you dislike two songs in a row then turn it off for an hour

Because of work restrictions I have been listening to a lot of Deezer recently who decide that because of where I live that I must like a lot of hip hop. And then I bought an album or three. Liking the latest Nicki Minaj ...

Fueller and alan33 correct.

You are a dad, you listen to dad rock and you are not cool. Except it.

So... should he except it or accept it?

Problem with 'modern rock' (non Dad Rock) is that its all been done before and in most cases better. One of exceptions is Muse, they capture the imagination and as one American said " they are the best export from England since the Beatles".  I can personally support that persuasion because I saw

them live in Teignmouth and they were equal to my experience of the live performance of Deep Purple (with Ritchie Blackmore) at the Hammersmith Odeon)
