nstream, various artists and artist metadata
Posted by: philipsweetman on 07 February 2015
I have seen (and read) in various places about the issue when looking at a compilation album in nstream. It shows the album artist correctly as "Various Artists" but each track should display the artist tag NOT the album artist tag as it seems to do. I am running Asset UPnP as the server and I know it is sending the information as I can pick it up from Asset Control and other UPnP Control Points. Haven't seen a fix anywhere, am I missing something?

Rather annoyingly when I look at my iPhone and iPad to find out which artist was playing I am told it is various artists like yourself above.
On delving a little bit deeper the problem seems to be with asset. When I stream the same compilation albums with either Twonky or minimserver I am told the name of the artist.
What I do like about asset though when I am playing a selection of tracks from different albums is that they are volume equalised using the repay gain settings, something Twonky or minimserver don't do.
All In all minor issues but I find it frustrating that I am streaming Upnp for about five years now and there is not one server that will give me all that Logitech squeezebox touch does yet.
Back to the gladiators now – at least the weather is conducive to it today in Dublin.

Hi Philip
I've just cleared this up on my copy of Asset v5. When ripping / converting my files for use on Asset, I've carefully completed the Album Artist field and set the compilation flag where necessary.
There is a change you need to make in Asset. Go into the Advanced settings screen and look at the browse tree on the left hand side of the screen. These are the browsing options you will see in the Naim app. The top 'folder' (container) is probably Artist / Album. Click on the Artist / Album folder to select it. In the drop-down box below the tree you can change Artist / Album to Album Artist / Album. You can similarly set up other ways of browsing by adding a new container. Asset will prompt you to restart it after making this change. Once done, all your carefully tagged Various Artist albums will appear together under V.
Hope this helps.
Hi Gavin,
Any chance of some screen shots, I took four days off work to fight with this and even with some advice from the guys here I failed miserably.
I could always get Asset to group compilation albums OK but no matter what I tried I couldn't see the artist, it would only show as Various Artists.
In the end I just gave up and stuck with Twonky, Minim server worked as well but didn't show any artist JPG's

Hi Rod
Will try.In the meantime, here's a link to a version of the Asset manual (such as it is).
https://www.dbpoweramp.com/asset-whs-manual.html
About halfway down is a screen shot of the Advanced Editing screen. It shows the tree on the left hand side. In this example, the top level is Artist (probably with Album beneath if the + was expanded). If you were to click on / select the Artist folder, Arstist would appear in the (currently greyed out) drop down labelled 'Selected' (beneath the tree structure).
If you use the drop down to select Album Artist then click Ok to save it all. Asset should automatically tell you it needs to restart and will do so itself.
Let me know how you get on.
PS This assumes you have Album Artist set to Various Artists for each of your compilations. Indeed it may well rely on that field being complete for ALL albums - mine certainly is.
Gavin,
thanks, hate anything beating me, I'll have a good look later when we return from carfest.
