Streaming internet radio from NAS to ND5XS

Posted by: Gajdzin on 14 February 2015

My ND5XS is a great for playing CDs from NAS, but useless as Internet Radio, because most of my favorite stations won't play on it (runs out of memory every few seconds, esp. on a Greek classical music station 'Audiophile Baroque', while my low-end laptop or even an old iPhone plays that station with no breaks).

So I was looking for ways around it and some users suggested streaming the radio station from NAS to ND5XS. There's a M3U file kindly posted by Laxton Yeo HERE. I copied the contents into a new *.m3u file and put it in the Music share on my NAS. Now if I open the Synology Media Server or the MinimServer from the Naim App on my iPad and go to "Playlists", I can see the new file. However, when I open it, it's empty.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I do not think you are doing anything wrong.  My fairly new ND5XS does the same.  Internet iRadio streaming has become a pain since last firmware update.  Buffering interruptions are frequent and some stations won't play any longer.

Furthermore, when I add new stations to my vTuner account via their web page my ND5 does not update its Added Stations list.  I have had recent correspondence with vTuner support but to no avail.

I suspect the latest firmware update has broken something.

And I use iRadio 24/7 so this is a big deal for me.

Thanks, Bobby. But have you tried streaming the radio from an external source like a NAS - which is what my post is about? There are posts on 2 internet fora, including this one, from folks who do that very successfully. So there must be something I'm doing wrong...

I did contemplate the same at one stage but from what I gathered it is somewhat difficult and depends a lot on what type of NAS you have.

I have a simple WD NAS running Twonky which does not have that feature.

My iRadio streaming has become so bad that I am considering alternatives for NAIM alltogether

Have you called Naim support about it? I wonder how many of those who experience this call their support. If Naim was aware they are losing customers because of this issue, they would have excellent motivation to fix it.

Are the internet radio difficulties common to all streamers on the latest firmware? My Superuniti in second system has worked fine but I have not updated even to 3.22. Considering NDS or NDX for main system but would be put off by iradio buffering problems.

Can NDS/NDX users indicate whether they have buffering problems?

Judging from historical posts here and at a Minimserver forum - yes, at least for NDX.

I have NDX...no IR buffering issues, now or before firmware upgrade...only issue is that after the upgrade, the NDX turns itself on each day....

It might depend on which stations you listen to. Radio Paradise behaves itself these days. Avro, too, most of the time. But try to find "Audiophile Baroque" out of Greece. Let us know if it plays longer than 5 seconds before running out of memory, it would be very helpful.

Touch wood! No buffering issues on my ND5 since the update. The iRadio turns on by it self, but Naim are aware of this. I just switch to a different input.

I've got Audiophile Baroque playing here with no problems whatsoever, 100% buffer and sounding very nice indeed.

Same here, no issues , 100% buffer...

Having said all that...I've just tried Audiophile Baroque, and it's dropping out all over the place! Radio Paradise and all my other preset stations are 100% stable.

Just been back to Greece....no issues at all, a solid 100% buffer....

Yes, same here. It's been like that since day 1, one year ago.

Am I right in understanding that those of us who have NDX w/ latest firmware can listen to Audiophile Baroque, while ND5XS owners can't? Or is it some other algorithm...?

Gajdzin...I doubt if every single iRadio station plays with zero problems, on every streamer, all of the time. We are using the same firmware, so it could be other factors, like router quality, Internet connection/speed/wifi/wired. I have to say, I have less buffering, and restoring the history is much faster, since I installed a switch. Do you have one?

Just tried this with a plain old MAC Mini - Audiophile Baroque - and it is a perfectly acceptable stream. [USB to DAC V1].

The lesson might be to get a MAC Mini and tune in via the webpage?

Simples.

+1

Since UQ2 has been updated to the latest f/w iRadio issues have become sporadic. They were definitely worse before. Still –mostly- 320k stations give a hard time to UQ2 (fluctuating buffer levels, dropouts etc). Last night, I could listen to Naim Radio (320) as well as Linn Jazz through my iMac and McBPR with no problems whatsoever while UQ2 was dead in shallow water in that regard. FWIW, Spotify Connect has so far worked superbly on the Qute.

I’m going to say it again. It’s better to leave web radio streaming to the proper computers. Btw, Audiophile Classic is another decent sounding station.

Well, I've yet to find an iRadio station that wouldn't play with zero problems on my low-end laptop or an iPhone of 3 generations ago... So a dedicated streamer that cost enough to buy a perfectly usable 2nd hand car can't achieve the feat that an old iPhone can?? I refuse to accept that. I rote an email to Naim support yesterday, we'll see what they say.

In the meantime, what this thread is REALLY about is streaming iRadio from a NAS to a Naim streamer and trying to get help with the m3u file that I copied from this very forum, yet doesn't work on my ND5XS... Any help most appreciated!

PS. No, my ND5XS is wired to the main house router (via a 1,5 meter run of AudioQuest Vodka, no less), there's no additional ethernet switch between the router and the streamer. I can install one and see if anything improves. IMHO it would defy the logic, but some things do

I understand what you are saying, and also your frustration, re laptop and expensive streamer. I have no idea if it will solve your problem, but a switch will simply be good for your system in any case. I bought my switch just before Christmas, for under £20. Some say that they can hear an improvement To SQ. Perhaps SIS, or one of the other savvy technical forum members can advise you.

I couldn't quite stretch to the 'Vodka', (apparently cheaper in Poland) so I got the 'Cinnamon'

It's not something that I've ever done, but Asset does offer an Internet Radio option (thereby coming into the streamer via the upnp option).

One idea to solve my problem (and a number of Naim streamers owners have done that) is to stream iRadio from a NAS, which is what this thread is all about That's what I'm trying to achieve, at least as a temporary workaround.

PS. I'll definitely try a switch, they are very cheap these days.

PPS. I couldn't resist Vodka. I'm Polish But seriously, it was a display cable at one hi-fi dealer, they couldn't sell it for a year, so I got a great price on it.

Having had a quick read of the Asset manual, this is done by setting up a user account at tunein.com and then adding the user details to the Asset config.

So does Minimserver. It's described on Minim forum by a Naim user. It requires a *.m3u file with a list of stations' URLs. I created the file and it doen't work... That's why I started this thread, to get help. Somebody on this forum had success streaming iRadio from DLNA server to Naim Streamer, I hope he will see this thread and have a look at my m3u file and see what I'm doing wrong...

This got me playing.

I created a new m3u file and put in a list of stations.

If I use Synology Media Server then it appears empty.

If I use Minimserver then I get a list of stations. None of them play though.

Please can you paste the two lines for your station so that I can try that.
