Volume settings NDX5

Posted by: PAULB on 20 February 2015

I have finally been able to make some time to play with my ND5XS and new Mu-So (which i can recommend for a study or a working desk in addition to the ND5XS). For simply trying out music i have installed Spotify. I do now have a problem Úsing the Naim app. It is not possible to controle the volume for the ND5XS where with the same app switching to the Mu-So this is no problem at all.

Somebody a suggestion what the reason is?

I can't find the option in the set-up to show the volume control for the ND5Xs in the app.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Paul.

The ND-series of players do not have pre-amps built in or any other sort of "volume control."  You need to control the volume via your pre-amp, integrated amp, etc.

The Naim App does support volume control of a Naim pre-amp or integrated if you've enabled this feature and connected your ND-player to your Naim pre or integrated by the proper cable.  Once connected and set up, you can use the Naim App to remotely control the volume of the pre or integrated.

Hope this helps,

Bart

Bart, how does one setup this? I have the nd5xs and Nait xs2 combo and they are connected through the din cable that is supplied bij Naim with this setup.

You need to fit a 3.5 to 3.5 mini jack cable connected between the RC connections on ND & Nait.   Set System Automation to "On" in the ND5 front display & show "Volume Control" in the app.

Its all in the manual

Hello Bart, Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

Will need to check my mini jack connection.

Kind regards

Paul

I have checked my mini jack cables and settings, but unfortunately no luck. Checked the issue with my dealer who was so kind to check with the importing company. The issue is as it seems a known bug. I hope this will be resolved with release 4.4.

Hi Paul -- I enabled system automation not too long ago; I know of no bugs and haven't read about any here on the forum.  Perhaps something still isn't set up right.

Where exactly is the mini jack plugged into Nait?  Are you sure you enabled system automation in the menu of the ND5XS?  In the Naim App, in the Setup Menu, in Audio Settings, have you enabled the 'show volume control' feature?  Let us know!

In the ND5XS settings menu (the spanner button on the remote) choose System Automation > Preamp > Enable. You need to have a mini jack cable linking from the remote out socket on the ND5XS to the remote in socket on the Nait.

On the main page of the app click on the settings icon (gear wheel) choose Audio settings > show volume control.

Yes there is a volume control bug associated with Mu-so & another streamer on the same app.

I'me beta testing 4.4 now,  but I don't have a Mu-so so can't help on that one

That aside I would suggest to turn off the Mu-so & reset the app to multi-room off & then try your ND5 volume control.  You need to be sure its actually working that way first,  then bring back the Mu-so & multi-room on the app

Thanks for clearing that up Mike.  I don't have a Mu-so either.

Hello Sjbabbey,

Followed your instructions to the letter. And guess what iT works fine.

It is always easy when you do it correctly.

Started from scratch and checked the Preamp Setting.

Still weird though.

Thinking about it, the issue could also have occured due to the version update to support Spotify.

Thanks

Glad to hear you've got it working.

You could be well be right about the firmware update causing the issue as the latest update did force a factory settings reset.
