Posted by: ragman on 20 February 2015

I'm streaming from jriver to an nac n 172 xs.

works FINE but for flac files the Naim app indicates Them as MP3 as mentioned in the Header.

Some help is welcome.

Is jriver set to transcode to mp3?

I'm not sure, there to set?

I also recognize some artifact in the sound.

And to have the same Loundress the Volume Setting Must be much higher than using dig 2.

How did you get the flacs? Technically a flac is a 'zipped file' once unzipped its back to what it was before.

Ok, MP3 issue solved.

didn't recognize that it was under medianetwork Setting.

Ragman,

Thanks for putting this on the forum. Whenever I used JRiver on my PC to control the Naim, the music got played in MP3 (that's why I always use the app or the remote). You clarified which setting to change to play music in its original format.

If I'm not mistaken the settings: Tools - Options - Media Network - ...Add or configure DLNA servers... - Audio - Mode: Original.   Correct?

Also nice to see that when I change the volume on either the app, the remote or the PC, the other two follow the changes.

Thanks!

yes, for the setting>:

Have also set under client options >> Audio Conversion: Don't convert Audio.

Are you using a Audiophil-24 bit DAC DLNA?

Do you have also some recordings there you have to increase significant the volume top achive same loudness?

Posted on: 22 February 2015 by Bert

Ragman,

thanks for the other setting as well. So to be 100% clear:

Tools - Options - Media Network - Client Options - Audio Conversion - "Don't convert Audio"

(I think the second option "Convert audio if necessary" will give the same result.)

No I don't have your problem, I get the same volume if I start a song from JRiver, app or remote.

Sorry what do you mean by "Are you using a Audiophil-24 bit DAC DLNA?"

The Main difference is between different recordings. Some are louder than others. Signifcant.

The artifact Sound is gone Since I use the dlna für 24-bit instead of standard.

Bert,

When you first set up or add a new DLNA server you will have the option to choose the server type i.e. Generic, Audiophile 24bit DAC, Sony BD etc. Remember that JRiver is a general UPnP server so will allow you to stream video as well as audio. The Audiophile 24 bit DAC DLNA option will be configured to give the best results with lossless/Hi Res audio files.

Sjbabbey,

Thanks! I found the option  under the JRiver on-line user manual, which is clear:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DAC_Settings

Under point (3) you can select Audiophile 24-bit DAC (point 4). If that option does not show, you can add it under point (5). The user manual provides the right settings. I found that if I specify "Specify output format" and select format "PCM 24 Bit" (point 6), an MP3 file sent to my Naim shows as a WAV44.1 format. I'm not sure if that is optimal, so I have selected Mode "Original", so an MP3 stays MP3 (one conversion less?).

Ragman,

under "Audiophile 24-bit DAC", under "Advanced" you can click or unclick "Volume leveling" (point 7). Maybe this will solve your volume problem?

Hi,

can exclude the "volume leveling" issue.

It's the same in case of sending the music via digital 2 input to the 172er.

Will do some tests from usb and other dlna servers..

@Bert,

thanks for the Link.

Have you understood why it is necessary to "associate" the DAC with "Audiophile 24-bit DAC" server?

My opinion was that if I chose this dlna server by the naim app as source everything is done.

Posted on: 23 February 2015 by Bert

Ragman,

Could well be the case. I believe that both options "Generic DLNA" and "Audiophile 24-bit" will send the original file format to the Naim streamer, as long as you specify "Original". I don't think that converting an original MP3 file to WAV makes any sense, since the damage (lossy conversion to MP3) is already done...

This UPnP & DLNA stuff is beyond my understanding.... I just try to follow the manuals and user support sites and see what works

Good luck!

Have done the

Associate your DAC with the "Audiophile 24-bit DAC" server configured above

but couldn't recognize an effect.

Regarding the volume effect I have found out that it is the same with a non JRIVER upnp as well.

Will check USB today. Maybe it is related to the file itself.
