Data direction

Just getting my head around how data travels within my wired network.

i have a switch connected to my router, then vortexbox/nas and ndx connected to the switch.

so, does data just go from the vortexbox to switch to ndx, or back to the router first then back to switch then to ndx?

I ask because i like the improvement I hear by adding an Audioquest cinnamon between ndx and the switch. Is there more improvement by adding another between vortexbox and switch?

regards

Data distribution is in both directions - dependant on the system components it can be simultaneous message exchange in both directions either not at the same time or at the same time,  but the bottom line is its in both directions.

Directional ethernet cables are ...........  lets say,  a marketing gimmik

Your router isn't necessary to play music from the NAS. The switch can handle the data without it - if you unplug the router>switch cable it should still work.

I have the exact same setup - sound took a good step forward when I introduced the switch and an SSD vortexbox to replace the original. And yes, once the music has started it still plays without the router.

To return to the other question: yes, a cinnamon lead between the vortex box and the switch will make a positive difference, as will another cinnamon from the router to the switch.

So will a Cinnamon from router to switch sound better than no cable at all from router to switch?

Internet radio will be better for certain.

In your setup the data flows backwards and forwards between the vortex box/nas and the NDX via the switch. However the key audio data payload travels from the NAS source throught to the NDX destination via the switch.

if you were using web radio or Spotify the audio data will flow from your router to switch to NDX.

But to be clear for the audio data to the flow in the stated directions requires other essential supporting data to be flowing in both directions.
