Local network vs Internet streaming: A comparison

Posted by: GregW on 24 February 2015

One persons approach to test the difference between local and internet streaming.

The conclusion:

As you can see, objectively, there is no evidence that locating the server >7000 km away did anything to the output quality of the Transporter. Neither the RightMark results nor the Dunn J-Test suggests any change beyond what I normally expect from inter-test variation.

Nice article.

As severeal of us have said for a long time the streamer doesn't care where the source of the media stream is. TCP is used as the media nextwork transport and so can work over a variety of network conditions and topologies.

The real difference that does affect things is the usability and control. UPnP DLNA is a home network profile and would not work effectively if at all over a WAN in the same way we use it. Internet or WAN streaming services rely on a specific connection to thier bespoke servers, and require 'connect' type control apps or web service APIs published for that service. Therefore streaming from Internet streaming services requires some integration, where as with home network DLNA media servers there is a greater amount of interoperability and plug and play.. Albeit not perfect.

Yes, true, the article is right.  It doesn't matter the distance from which you are downloading a file - provided you have a stable connection. The problem with the test is that it was a one-off and not done over time.  As anyone who has subscribed to a Video Streaming service can attest - quality can vary over time (i.e. Netflix on Friday Evenings stateside).

For most of us, we like that we have the ability to be able to control our connection to our content end to end. I can enable QoS on my network and if that is not enough, I can simply put my Streamer and NAS on one switch and everything else goes through another. as Simon-in-Suffolk put it, it is just simpler that way.
