Best NAS for NAIM HDX
Posted by: Checkthisout68 on 26 February 2015
Hi, I am looking for a good working NAS solution as backup for my 2TB HDX. I would not necessarily stream from the NAS but have 2 drives as RAID 1 for additional secure backup.
Now, I can see ReadyNAS, Synology and others on the net, ranging from around 150 € up to many hundred and further. But what do I really need for my purpose?
Thanks,
Chris
Netgear ReadyNAS - 2 x 2TB.
Can't go wrong with one of these ![]()
Question, why go with a NAS? Wouldn't a simple 2TB drive suffice for a backup? I mean even a 4TB drive is under $200, if you have a desktop you could just put it in that and be done. Or if not, a simple USB 3.0 enclosure attached to a USB port on your router would work too.
I personally have a Synology NAS as I do a lot more than just backup. It is my media server, back up server, cloud storage server, etc. More than you need.

Hi guys, thanks for your advice. I agree and will go for a simple backup solution.
Cheers, Chris
Can anyone advise how to back up the HDX to a simple USB 2TB drive? As far as I can determine from the manual, it is necessary to nominate a network share as a music store which I assume requires an ethernet connection.

You can't program the HDX to do its backup "thing" other than over the network I'm 99% sure.
You can just copy over the MQ folder, but that's not the same as letting it do a proper backup.
CheckThisOut/Bart/Hutton,
Apologies, looks like the USB is used for scanning for local files and accessing them - I haven't done this myself, so it might be worth playing with and then accessing the HDX with the Naim Client and seeing what is possible.
I use an external USB HDD on my NAS and have a script that runs nightly doing a differential backup. When full I give the external HDD to a friend as my offsite backup.
My suggestion if the Naim Client doesn't give you the functionality you need:
Mount the USB HDD on your PC;
Mount the HDX Share on your PC;
Manually copy the files;
Monthly/Quarterly repeat doing a diff using something like xcopy/rsync.
CheckThisOut - if you're not using networking on the HDX at all at the moment then you will need to setup an IP address and then use your PC to connect to this. Their are various gotcha's in doing this if you do not understand networking. Just shout and I am sure that the Naim Community will assist.

Phil Harris may comment, but again, I'm pretty sure that this does not provide the same data as letting the HDX run its backup routine and create a backup on a network Backup destination that the HDX recognizes. Thus, restoring FROM a simple copy-it-over backup is either not possible, or much more complicated.
The advice I got long ago from Naim was to not do the simple copy-it-over method.
