Music beyond reach

Posted by: Haim Ronen on 28 February 2015

What particular album would you have liked to have but its scarcity and/or high price are preventing you from getting it?

Number one on my list are the obscure Preludes composed and performed by Roland Hanna (piano). Used copies in Japan are going for more than $100 for each of the two discs and a single new one for $390.

I thought it was beyond reach, but .......

I looked at Gary's link and saw the disc there had a different left sleeve.  The sleeve on discogs says it was on the CTI label.

CTI was a wonderful label where I got my start in jazz listening in the 80's.  It was a recording by Hubert Laws  "The San Francisco Concert".  Probably considered smooth jazz nowdays but it was music I found accessible to try a new experience and spread from there.

I hadn't heard The San Francisco Concert in probably 25 years and from time to time would try a search and see used copies at high prices and I no longer used vinyl.  I never found it in a digital download format until ..........today !!!!!  I was getting a photo of the cover to post and ......

It has been reissued  !!  And is available in mp3 download for $3.99 US.  It is now downloaded I will listen shortly.

An old friend just came home.  My thanks to a prompt from this thread.

ps.  Haim, the opening track is identical to the opener on Dave Grusin "One Of A Kind" disc you recently posted, "Modaji" (I have that as well).  I didn't remember them  both opening with the same song.

Thanks for finding it. I much prefer a CD but if everything else fails I will get the vinyl version.

Haim, I don't know why I passed these up when they first came out?  I maybe thought it was too expensive and falsely believed they would be available for the same price when I was ready for them.

Currently going for $ 3,798.23

or the older more extensive set that looked like this:

The set if you can find it is also in the thousands.  The highly sought after individual disc are currently running around $160 - $170 each.

Another one that eluded me was this set from Georges Cziffra.  Currently going for $459.

Found a photo of half the set (box 2 - 100 discs) of 200 discs currently going for $ 2,092.89.

I can't understand why CD issues can attain such lofty values. The media is completely reproducible with no loss of quality whereas first press vinyl can't be reproduced in the same way. If these CD sets above were rereleased then their current value would likely plummet.

This happens from time to time.

Some years ago I got the Klemperer recording of Berlioz' Fantastic Symphony on deleted EMI CD for £20 which is a crazy price for most things, though not for me in this special case. I had owned the recording on full price and Classics For Pleasure [suoper-budget LP] before and knew its significance.

With EMI's massive almost complete Klemperer Edition the separate old CDs [same remastering for all that] are now selling for less than 10. The new unused EMI CDs [NOS] were selling for in excess of £200, so my £20 CD was very lucky.

An example is the excruciating price of Peter Hurford's Complete Bach Organ Music on Decca with is nearly £2K for fifteen or fourteen CDs! I almost bought it for £60 when still current, but preferred to get the £80 Helmut Walcha set that is still in print after more than fifteen years of release on CD - recorded between 1947 and 1952.

This is a 2009 release which unfortunately is not available anymore( including used copies). Cynthia Raim is still active, performing in the Philadelphia area, and hopefully the Connoisseur Society will re-issue it.
