Qobuz claim streaming via naim is on its way 1st half 2015?

Posted by: Bigfoot on 03 March 2015

Just translated this from the Qobuz forums where Qobuz administrator claims that Qobuz integration is expected in 1st half 2015:

Question:

Bonjour,
Cordialement

(I need to purchase an amp Naim Uniqute V2 I like to know if I can listen to this Qobuz streaming device (for Spotify, it's possible).

Qobuz administrator:

C’est prévu courant première moitié 2015 oui.
 Cordialement.

(It is expected current first half 2015 yes.)
  Best Regards.

If I had unsolvable problems with Sonos, good luck to you all !

This would be good news for Naim owners in countries where Qobuz is available.

As far as I can tell, Qobuz has no plan for expanding to the U.S., so probably not an option for me. If they did, I would subscribe for year, and run in parallel with Deezer Elite.

Would be verry good news - have already vote on Qobuz-site for it.

Actualy running my streaming-abo here in Germany trough Squeezebox Touch with Kernel-Update and digital-koax into 172/200.

Come on Naim - let´s do it

Tidal is Qobuz in the US...

Tune Hifi in Seattle uses it regularly, once my main system is back up I shall experiment as well…  but native streaming into the NDS would sure be nice!

Not true - TIDAL is WiMP, a Swedish company.  Qobuz is an unrelated French company.

At one point last year Qobuz had announced that it would launch in the US and even carried out limited beta testing.  This was prior to the news regarding its financial health and I have seen little about a US launch in the last 6 months or so.

Would be interesting giving the Qobuz catalogue...

The people on the Qobuz stand at the Bristol show said it would definitely be this year. I went straight to the the Naim stand where this claim was was loftily dismissed. Actually, they wouldn't answer the question and instead dropped hints about renewed financial difficulty for Qobuz.

So what is their policy on supporting streaming services? Is it:

A) Support them once a provider such as Spotify becomes globally dominant
B) Spotify is supported to enable sales of Muso to John Lewis customers and "music discovery" for owners of higher end systems - even though better alternatives are available
C) To give their customers the best choice of services by supporting market leading high res providers?

To me, only is C acceptable.

Exactly the same here - the hardest thing to swallow was the attitude on the Naim stand the nice friendly people on the Qobuz stand were a complete contrast.

I agree with Bigfoot.

I have just posted on another thread in this forum that I have recently had the opportunity to listen to the Auralic Aries/Vega streamer DAC. Not only does it sound very good indeed, but it offers out-of-the-box integration with a number of streaming services (Qobus, Tidal and Spotify - possibly more), and also offers native DSD streaming capability (DSD64 & DSD128).

Why can't Naim and Linn offer this level of flexibility?

Linn support Tidal integration for their DS product line and recently made the following 'unofficial' statement on the Linn Forum:

"With respect to Qobuz, it's clear they care deeply about quality music. Given their strong presence in a number of countries across Europe, we are actively investigating support for Qobuz in the DS. Further, we are hopeful that Qobuz will technically and commercially allow us to provide a UI experience similar to the one we've been able to provide for Tidal."

Which is, sadly for us Naim streamer owners, rather more positive than anything that we've heard from Naim

...as the Aries is an OpenHome-based device, I suspect that there has already been some discussion within Linn regarding streaming service integration (with TIDAL and Spotify already in hand).

Lack of clarity around future plans is making me stall on which product to go for. ND5 XS would be my pref if Tidal / Qobuz is on its way, if not then DAC v1 or nDAC with Sonos. But If bought a dac v1 then Qobuz / Tidal was announced for ND5, I'd be gutted, so for now I'm not confident enough to invest.

There must be others in similar a similar position. If Naim want to be regarded as market leaders in streaming tech, they should support market leading hi res services and let customers take the risk of which to sign up to. UPnP isn't my priority.

My listening has now shifted primarily to Qobuz as they have a huge classical catalogue which I'm having a great time exploring.  I haven't used my NDX since Christmas but have kept it in the hope rather than the expectation that Naim will provide support for Qobuz and/or Tidal.  There are plenty of other options out there and, sadly I don't think the NDX will be with me for much longer. It's a good digital source for streaming from a NAS or internet radio and I get on fine with nStream but it no longer meets my needs...

It would be great for Naim to take the opportunity to get 'closer' to a decent quality supplier of digital music.

There is also a certain logic to placing the English "roast beef" in a French sarnie. As Naim can't offer a digital service of their own (music in) or a deep portfolio of loudspeakers (music out)

Sigh. How many times do we need to beg for this without any response - its really just about communication and attitude, I think we all appreciate there's real work involved in these integrations. At least send us a poll!

I'm close to done with Naim, and certainly won't be my choice for an upgrade. Actively looking at Devialet and the Auralic.

I recently read a comparison of the Aurender X100L, Antipodes N1Z and Aries all streaming via USB through a Devialet.  The Antipodes was actually rated slightly ahead of the Aurender in terms of SQ but both were well ahead of the Aries. The Aurender came out on top in terms of build quality, ease of setup and operation and was rated best overall.  Tidal support is in Beta and is reportedly not stable yet so it may be worth waiting a couple of months.

I understand that the recently launched Aurender N100 has basically the same technology as the X100L but doesn't have the internal HDDs and is £1000/$1000 cheaper depending on where you are. It should definitely be worth a listen.

i also feel Qobuz's using financial position, whether implied or not to drag their heels on supporting a great service is inappropriate. the more people speculate on them going under, the more likely it is to become a self fulfilling prophecy.

How about investing in supporting services such as Qobuz / Tidal to develop the high res market and in turn sell more products, rather than selling products that don't do what many potential buyers or current owners would like to do with them?

I upgraded my Naim system with a Nait XS 2 and a ND5 XS 2 weeks ago. My original streaming player was a Squeezebox Touch. I used Spotify with the SBT and last year tried Qobuz for a month trial. In the end I kept Spotify as I couldn't really tell the difference though Qobuz  did have the slight edge. On upgrading to the ND5 XS I found Spotify connect easier to use. I am now tying Qobuz for a second time using the SBT into the ND5 XS and now Qobuz beats Spotify easily. A far more revealing sound, before it was slightly bland. I have now stopped my Spotify premium subscription and will continue with Qobuz via the SBT for now.

Hopefully Naim will integrate Qobuz in the near future. On the Qobuz iPad app it shows a connect feature which I assume is similar to the Spotify one. So integration shouldn't be too difficult? I assume this connect feature works with Sonos.

You can bet it's a case of commercial negotiations restricting the communication that Naim may want to make. The whole process is nevertheless extremely frustrating. I've tried Spotify but the sound quality is just too poor for anything other than background.
