Unitiserve 88.2/24 or 176.4/24
Posted by: GerryMcg on 31 March 2011
Hi have downloaded a few HiRes tracks and bought the 88.2/24 version as the 176.4 sample rate is not listed on the Unitiserve spec.
What is likely to be better and can the Serve play the 176.4 sample .
Gerry
176.4 is not a supported sample rate on any of our servers
I have just nooticed that inadvertently I had ordered the 176.4 version of Let it Bleed, and I must say the sound quality is exceptional. Perhaps Jan is correct regarding the nDac. Nevertheless what is the preferred format if available - 88.2 or 176.4.
Gerry
Yes the DAC does but Servers do not
Steven,
Can you clarify - Gerry has been playing Let it Bleed on his US/nDAC, I believe.
So, does the US handle the file OK via the spdif, but won't serve it over uPNP - or are you saying it shouldn't handle it at all?

Thanks M,
That's right .
Gerry
Sample rates which are unsupported for LOCAL playback on the DAC will be down-sampled to 44.1 kHz.
The Uniti family supports files up to 96 kHz.
Therefore–88.2 kHz via the Uniti / NDX etc. would be the best option.
Thanks very much David.
Gerry,
Just in case you're not aware:
You can install Audacity - which is free.
You can then load up the file and the export it - changing the sampling rate, to 96k for instance.

Thanks M ,
No I was not aware and I shall try this. My dealer suggested that it was possible that, via S/PDIF, the 176.4 may be supported by the DAC.
I will try Audacity and confirm.
I know you were interested in the outcome of my CDS3/555PD v Userve/nDac/XPS2 and I posted in HIFi Corner yesterday - interesting!!

Will the 176.4kHz sample rate be supported in a future firmware release, or is this a permanent limitation for the current gen of Naim servers?
This is a bit of a surprise since, using the UnitiServe SSD as an example, I see that both its manual and "features" section say "up to 24bit/192kHz", and it is only in its "specifications" section where 176.4 is omitted from the list of supported sample rates.
Funny how it took HDtrack's Stones releases to bring this to light.
Thanks.

David,
When you say the file would be downsampled to 44.1KHz does it retain it at 24bit?
