N-Serve / Stream - first impressions
Posted by: Tog on 31 March 2011
More subdued colour scheme (far less luminous green!)
Very responsive volume control - much better
Uncluttered interface
Overall much faster - close to Remote ( especially loading cover art - possibly faster - interface is much simpler than Apple's.
Overall much closer to Remote - no that's unfair like comparing oranges and apples - they are still quite different - with different functionality - close and better than all the others.
Well done all - especially TJ
Tog
Tog,
I honestly cannot find a meaningful difference betwen PlugPlayer and Remote.
They are basically the same.
How is PP harder to use? What isn't intuitive.
I use both everyday and they are on equal ground in my estimation. PP is only more complicated because you select a Server and Renderer (if you have more than one).
Do you actually use it? If so, how and why? If you are a Mac guy, what use do you have for it?
-p
Used as an alternative to the first version of nStream since it was iPad native - have you noticed those subtle animations that Remote uses to provide user feedback - or how slow and unresponsive PP is .... VB allows me to be both Mac guy and UPnP victim,
Tog
PP is slow? hmmmmmmmm, that might be a problem exclusive to you. Do you have a 3G or something?
I only have a G card and router. Streaming 320 mp3s is speedy without drops. Navigating the library is fast. And it is faster than Remote in populating the thumbs etc....
And no.... what "subtle animations" do you speak of??
Forget it though..... you are dead set on not liking it. Curious???? How fast is Remote at streaming 320s to your iPhone?
-p
Use iPeng and the Playback add in and stream full definition WAV/FLAC to your iPhone via wifi .. whatever formats you want .. get full artwork, extremely fast, flexible, customisable browsing, long track names, BBC iPlayer and Radio3 HD (in the UK) . way ahead of clunky, restrictive PP (imo)..
I will try anything.... Will iPeng work with UPNP servers? I looked at it years ago when considering a SB. Also will it stream over 3G, as I mostly use PP away from home.
FYI, PP streams any codec I have losslessly, it has "full artwork" etc.... what is clunky and restrictive about it? I set up 2 servers in JRMC. One to "never transcode", the other to "always transcode to 320 mp3". I use the latter remotely (3g), and the former locally (rarely). Going over 3G I get a few dropouts a minute with lossless. Not a big deal but given what I am plugging it into, 320 is more than enough.
I am honestly curious, because if something else will serve me better I am all over it.

Welcome to Apple - not perfect but fun.
Tog
iPeng and Playback is splendid. Checkout the CustomBrowse plug in for Squeezecenter too - means you can create, well, customised browse trees in a very flexible way - and if you happen to speak sql there's no limit to how you can view your stuff. I've got a cheap-ish Logic 3 dock for my iTouch too - iPeng and Playback turns it into an excellent portable round the house and garden radio and music player. Nothing stopping you using a high quality dock like the Pure i20 and getting at the digital datastream either.

It depends on Squeezecenter as a server - but you can just point that at your music library. I believe SC can be remote accessed through any web browswer, but haven't tried it.
It'll only cost you a few dollars and a bit of time to play around and make up your own mind. I just prefer the view and control it lets me have of my music to anything else I've tried
Tog
iPeng is an iPhone/Touch app that lets you remotely control Squeezecenter and stream to squeezeboxes or Logitech Touches.
Playback is an add-in for it that lets you stream to the iPhone itself - it adds your iPhone to the list of players. So transcoding, cover-art, browsing etc. are all the same as Squeezecenter. I use a Touch as a streamer and a SB3 as part of a second system, so it all fits for me. Maybe you should look at the Touch again? It makes life very simple.
OTOH I can see how and understand why you're commited to UPnP and JRMC - I thought Songbook was considerably better as a control point/remote app than PP, so possibly that's worth you trying too.
I couldn't live with PlugPlayer - it just chops off the end of album names and tracks - try figuring out which of seven art-less "Bach The Well-Tempered Cl..." is the one I want!
Glad most of you are enjoying the new apps. I think the iPad versions really add a lot to the products. Especially n-Serve with all that lovely metadata that music geeks can use to explore their music collections. Being able to be listening to a piece of music then click on the performer or composer name in the now playing track info view and have the app jump to that place in your music library is just great for me. I've found lots music i didn't know I had with that feature!
n-Stream on the iPad makes it much easier to use than on the iPhone, especially now with the album cover art view. Things are generally faster too. I know some of you are still hankering after a slider for track progress on the UPnP now playing screen but this is something that is not easy to add to the app in the short term. The app effectively is a remote control for the Uniti products and supports the features that are available on the product. Not all UPnP servers actually expose total track time or allow a UPnP player to skip to an arbitrary point in the track. Because of this lack in consistency between servers we originally opted to leave this feature off.
Well done TJ - we do appreciate the effort that has gone into the apps.
One question - could playlist control / creation ever be a part of n-stream?
Tog
Hi,
I've upgraded the n-Serve app on my iPod Touch. Since I don't care for playlists, the old 1.3 version was more intuitive to use. For example: if you touch a single track with the 1.3 version it starts playing immediately. With the 2.0 software, you get another question if you'd like to play only that track or the album from that track on.
Furthermore, I'd like to know if it's possible to change the language from Dutch (which looks a bit clumsy to me) to English??
I've installed the 1.3 version again and will get myself an iPad first before moving to 2.0 again...
Regards,
Michel
Cheers Tog, playlists I certainly wouldn't rule it out! I'd love to see it make it in sooner rather than later
Michel, the n-Serve language follows the iPhone language so if your phone is set to Dutch the app is in Dutch etc. If you have found any particular glitches with the translation then please send me a screenshot of the text and a suggestion for a change. I'll run it by our Dutch speakers. As for the extra level of button press to get a track playing this actually gives you more control over what and how your selection is played and it also prevents accidentally playing something, which can be annoying if you have spent ages carefully crafting a playlist.
Hi TJ,
Thank you for your quick reply. No it's not that there are any specific mistakes in the Dutch translation. Because I'm familiar with words as "Playlists" makes a translation in "Afspeellijst" look a bit strange, but it's absolutely correct!
BTW: My appologies, I didn't know I had to set the language to English on the iPod, I'll give it another try!
Enjoy your weekend!
Regards,
Michel
I will just stick with what I am doing and continue to try everything under the sun.
Squeezeserver was much too slow for me and couldn't handle half of my library.
Airplay requires iTunes right? Not happening for too many reasons to list, including the one above.
I think we just have different tastes.

Dont they all cut off the names when browsing. I KNOW that Remote does it. what does iPeng do with badly tagged track names? According to the screenshots in the app store, they ALL behave similarly.
Lastly, why do you keep mentioning Album Art. PP has album art at every level from Artist to track and playlists. You can even turn it off if you desire.

and that is cool Patrick

Just a thought / suggestion which might be easier in the short term to implement.
In n-Stream, you can jump back to the (server) root of the UPnP input if you want to avoid navigating back one step at a time, with the screen refresh each time, after you have finished playing a track / album. Why not add additional buttons at the bottom of the screen to jump you directly back to Artists, Albums and Genre. That I reckon I could live with.
Think about it, it's very similar to using this forum, you jump to the categories using the buttons, top & bottom. To the end user, UPnP is very similar to internet forums in terms of navigation.
What about caching the said 'tree branches' for faster loading (as is already done with cover art), you could add a button (or drag the screen down) to refresh the caches when you know additional music or other changes have been added. You have to do this with the server anyway to update the branches that are being served, but for the most time music already stored on the server generally does not move around. Doing both could be part of the steps you have to carry out when adding new music. it can be done, the Forum App does this in a similar way.
These were the kind of changes and additional features I had hoped might be in the n-Stream update, but not one new feature, all cosmetic That only took 1 year, so I won't hold my breath.
We are perfectionists (why else would we buy Naim gear?) but give TJ and Co a break - sure there is still a lot to do but that doesn't mean this isn't a good step in the right direction AllenB.

Hi TJ,
An "Ignore prefixes when sorting by artist" option would be great. I like that, for instance, The Who show up under "W" rather than "T" without having to change the tag to just "Who, The".

I'd love to try this now that it is free but...
I spent all yesterday afternoon trying to get the n-stream app on to my ipod touch without success. I got the latest version of iTunes (which now has to have Quicktime installed as well - bloatware or what??) and upgraded my ipod software to the latest version. Using my pc I found and downloaded the n-stream app but there is no way I can get it onto my my ipod - there doesn't seem to be a way of syncing apps. The software version is shown as 1.1.5(with software upgrade). The ipod manual I have doesn't mention anything about adding apps although my ipod has the default ones on the home screen. I suspect the problem is that I bought my ipod in October 2008 and it is now so ancient that Apple don't support it any more - surely this can't be so?.
Hi Pev,
Once you have connected your iPod to your PC (or Mac) it will become visible in iTunes. Click on it and you'll see that from there you can synchronise the iPod. Afterwards, the app should be visible on your iPod...
Hope this helps...

Michel
I have just bought an NDX. It cost me £3K and sounds fantastic.
We are in 2011 and technology does some amazing things. If I had seen and investigated the second-rate means of controlling my new £3K toy before I bought it, I might just have looked elsewhere.
Naim needs to get its act together and provide a remote control solution worthy of the quality and price of its products in my view.
