N-Serve / Stream - first impressions

Posted by: Tog on 31 March 2011

Much faster loading cover art!

More subdued colour scheme (far less luminous green!)

Very responsive volume control - much better

Uncluttered interface

Overall much faster - close to Remote ( especially loading cover art - possibly faster - interface is much simpler than Apple's.

Overall much closer to Remote - no that's unfair like comparing oranges and apples - they are still quite different - with different functionality - close and better than all the others.

Well done all - especially TJ

Brave new world - not hifi engineering but software; the product development lifecycles are very different and it is to be expected that they will find it hard at the start.

As an example the latest update of Bliss (web based tagging and cover art program) is causing my system all kinds of problems - quick email instant response - patch available tomorrow. Very quick - but then it has to be.

Hi Michel

thanks for the kind suggestion - unfortunately I've done that and tried all sorts of ways to get the app from my pc to my ipod - reset to factory settings, resync, drag and drop, update software (both ipod and itunes), but nothing works. There is no app tab on my ipod sync screen in itunes and no mention of getting new apps in my ipod manual so I am relucantly coming to the conclusion that apps are only downloadable on more recent models of ipod touch.

Come on you Apple fans - convince this sceptic that my ipod is more than an obsolete overpriced mp3 player.

I'm no Apple fan, nor a computer specialist, but do you see your iPod in iTunes and are you able to put some music on it?? When I sync my iPod, the apps and music are both synchronised...

Regards,

Michel

Hey Pev

Sorry if you've already tried this, but have you looked in the user manual? This is for the older versions so should work for you hopefully...

Thanks David and Michel (again) - unfortunately the itunes screen when I connect my ipod doesn't show apps as a sync option. I can sync music and pictures no problem either using the tabs above the sync area or dragging a file on to my ipod area in the left sidebar. The manual for my ipod is very different and the screens are not the same. The link you kindly offered relates to ipods with software OS3.1 - mine is on version 1.1.5 - this is the latest available for my device (downloaded yesterday from  itunes).

I just took a look at the iTunes store. It seems that iOS 3.1.3 or higher is required for this app.

Maybe you can contact Apple with this issue. You cannot blame Naim for this ...

Regards,

Michel

We are in 2011 and technology does some amazing things. If I had seen and investigated the second-rate means of controlling my new £3K toy before I bought it, I might just have looked elsewhere.

Naim needs to get its act together and provide a remote control solution worthy of the quality and price of its products in my view.

I presume this is a wind-up, yes?

Nope, why should it be?

What did you use when you demo'd the NDX?

@Pev

I think you have a very first generation iPod with one of the original operating systems. It looks like you need to follow these instructions to update the firmware:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052

The highest firmware version available for your device is 3.1.3 but this is the minimum version required for our apps so you will be fine

@TJ

Thanks - I followed your instructions and it worked! Cost me £.2.99 though....

It may be worth putting a note somewhere for  early ipod owners as itunes was telling me I already had the latest software before. Apple's bad not Naim's of course!

Now to get the Uniti's software updated...

What about support for subscription streaming services (Rhapsody, Spotify, Pandora)?

Thanks!

Overall function of n-Serve (used on a iPhone) is better, but it doesn't seem to be possible to create a random playlist any more. You can play whole albums in random order, but not individual tracks. Firing up a random playlist was how I used my Unitiserve most frequently previously, and I'd like to be able to continue to do so from n-Serve, rather than having to do so via the web browser.

Am I missing something?

Hi Ben, yes you are right shuffle now shuffles albums not tracks. I think you can achieve what you want by shuffling albums then pressing the shuffle button (next to the repeat button)

Posted on: 07 April 2011 by Plinko
TJ, I don't think anyone wants to keep pressing album shuffle after every song in order to get a random playlist.  Please let me know if I misunderstand the functionality.

Are random playlists formally on the dev roadmap?  What else?

Thanks and congrats on the recent app upgrades.

We need

1. The ability to select tracks from different albums into a playlist

2. The ability to save playlist

3. The ability to random shuffle on "all music"

This should be possible without resorting to UPnP extensions and so locking out some UPnP servers.

RE: nServe

When I plug a USB flash drive into my Serve, I'd like to be able to see a list of the songs, as numbered, like it does when plugging into the Qute and using nStream.

Thanks!

Sorry for bumping my own post, but...

Was this a stupid question?   Or perhaps so far down the Serve/Stream priority list as to not merit consideration at this time?  I did read that the Squeezebox was now supporting Spotify, so I didn't think it was too far OT.

Personally, I listen to Rhapsody as often as Radio Paradise, and for the same purpose -- to discover new albums to purchase (so I can listen at higher resolution).  When I hear a tune on the radio I like, I'll go to Rhapsody and sample their work.   Once logged in, I  also get value from Rhapsody's reference engine.

Right now, I am doing this on my PC music server connected to the DAC, but am still thinking about one day owning a Naim source.   I think this would add value to Naim network players, but perhaps I am the only one who thinks so?

I think your question regarding Rhapsody is a great one.  I use Rhapsody the same you describe and I would love to be able to play it through my ndx/nserve set up.  Right now i am using a Sonos hooked up to my ndac and it sounds fine.  But I wonder how much better it would be through the. Ndx/nserve.
