Techiephobe advice required for NDX!

Posted by: Jason on 02 April 2011

Just considering where I want to go for the future ie: retain CDP and upgrade with power supply, or change CDP for NDX/HDX.

At present, I could afford to change in my CDX2 and get an NDX but can't stretch to an HDX.  I do not have any NAS, just a laptop and desktop both with itunes loaded and both running via a wireless "N" Belkin router.  I have itunes on both computers and find that easy to use.

Would I currently be able to use the NDX to access music from itunes wirelessly on my computers, or is it not as simple as that? (My router would not be easy to wire to)

Long term, I would look to have a dedicated NAS or even a unitiserve if funds permitted, but it may be some months before I would get to that stage, so want to know how useable NDX would be with my current situation.

I guess the other consideration is I probably have a right mix of music file types on itunes, so is that easy enough to convert to make play on NDX?

Thanks

Jason.

Short answer, yes.  If you install a simple UpNP server on both computers then the NDX will find them and play whatever is on them.  It will depend on whether you are Apple or PC as to which UpNP software you install.  It's easy and although it's not highly recommended that you do this all wirelessly it WILL work if your router is up to the task.

Long answer is of course littered with questions.  What value you have as far as cd collection, how interested are you in moving all of your cds to hard drives, how are you currently accessing your music off those computers now, and most importantly, have you had a chance to hear an NDX?

For some, it's a no brainer.

Move into an NDX, start saving for a Serve, enjoy.  For others it's a LOT more complicated when looking at the nDac, HDX, various cd players, etc, etc.  You will get as many opinions on this as you like.  It is all really more your call than anyone else's.  My personal opinion is that with an NDX you will be moving forward if you like the convience of having your music on your computer and are comfortable with that.

Best advice as always is to listen to one and see if it fits for you because from a practical standpoint (the issues you mentioned) it will definately work.

RealHifi,

Thats great.  Thank you for your reply. I shall now give this some more thought as I now know I can at least get up and running before adding other drives/servers etc, so will look to have a demo.

Many thanks.
