Backup HDX to a router attached drive

Posted by: Checkthisout68 on 06 March 2015

Hi, I have been trying for two hours now and can't get it to work.

I have a brand new 2TB USB 3.0 drive attached to a Fritz Router 7490 and there I have set it up as NAS storage with a User Name and Password.

In the HDX menu under network shares it is disabled.

Under "Add new music backup" it cannot be found. And I had it being able to be found once or twice but can't remember how and then the error message "can't convert to ..backup storage" came.

What do I have to do in order to make it work?

Many thanks

Chris

Chris -- pay close attention to the user manual's instructions, section 4.8.4 of the current manual.

Have you created a shared folder on the drive to use as your backup?  You cannot designate a volume (drive) as a backup -- it has to be a shared folder.  It also has to be EMPTY.

What did you name this folder?  Use no special characters and NO SPACES.

Then, you have to use the HDX to convert that folder to a Network Share.  Once that has happened, let it sit a bit and think.

Then, you have to use the HDX to convert that Share to a Backup location using the Add Backup function.  Again, after that is done, let it sit a bit and think.  Eventually it'll show up as a Backup that you can use as a destination for times backups!

NOTE:  It is not entirely clear to me that a usb drive plugged into your router is a viable device to house a network share or store or backup.  But maybe it is; I just don't know.

Hi Bart,

I have created a folder on the attached drive, which is empty and it is called "HDXBackup".

The HDX recognizes the Router NAS, but not this folder. It will not convert anything as it cannot find a shared folder.

What next?

Is it truly a SHARED folder?  I suspect not -- as there is no operating system on the drive to create a shared folder with the appropriate permissions.  This is at the limit of my knowledge; but I do know that there is a difference between a shared folder and one that's not shared on a nas.

Maybe someone else will chime in and let you know if what you're trying to do (use a usb drive this way) is even feasible.

Hi Bart, post probably you are right. I am not sure either whether or not the router software can really create a shared folder. It could well be that the router only provide manual storage capabilities...

Hi Chris, I got backup to NAS working today, only after I renamed the workgroup on my Synology NAS  to NAIM. Before I did this, I could create a network store, but not a backup device. Looks like if you cannot set the workgroup it does not work.

I do not use fixed ip addresses, it works just fine with the host name DISKSTATION. Maybe for backup you need a real NAS?

Good luck, Cees
