simulating a trigger for automatic screen operation

Posted by: House on 07 March 2015

I am just about to install a Sony projector in my cave, running DVDs from an Xbox 1 and the audio through my Naim 2.0 system. I have ordered a great automated screen, and was hoping to set it up to automatically come down when the projector is turned on.

Apparently the projector does not have the necessary trigger to do this, and as I am running the system through HiFi, I am not using a cinema source, which is where the trigger would normally come from.

Has anyone found a work-around?  There must be a way that the power draw through the plug for the projector (when it is turned on) can be used to stimulate a trigger??

Any thoughts welcome.  Thanks

The only way I can think of is to use a third party all-in-one remote, such as an Rti or Control 4, which uses a controller which can send a command to operate the screen.

That's the way my last set-up worked.

Quite pricey though...

One thought could be to use one of those energy saving switches often sold for use with computers. These are designed to turn on all the peripherals when the computer is turned on.

If you plugged the projector in place of the computer the socket would work the same so it would become live when the projector was switched on.

The challenge is then to control the screen. If you are handy with a soldering iron then a small control box with a mains double pole relay would suffice, assuming that the screen is controlled by a switch currently.
