Apple Watch

Would you buy one? I would.

I think it is going to be a [great] success as it defines a new age communication device - connecting to bluetooth and through voice recognition software one can dial a number from wrist watch, messaging, precise time keeping, and so on.

I think you are missing the point Apple Watch is not only a watch, just like the iPhone, which is not just only a cell phone.

Yes but I already wear a watch and carry an iPhone why would I need to duplicate functions?

Get rid of your watch then. The iphone will tell you what the time is.

There are several reasons for me:

1) Do I need to take out my iPhone out of my pocket every time when some one sends me a message, an email or a notifications while I am driving?

2) Do I need to spend 1/2 hour to adjust my watch when I fly from San Francisco to Tokyo or New York.

3) Do I need to take out my iPhone out of my pocket whenever I pay?

4) Do I need some extra gadgets when I do my exercises?

5) Do I need to reach out a remote control when I open my garage door?

6) Do I need to take out an iPhone out of my pocket to answer a quick phone call?

7) Do I need to take out an iPhone out of my pocket to control my music listening?

And the list goes on when developers come out with smart apps...

Given that I only ever use a telephone to speak to people...

Then iPhone (or any smart phone) would be an overkill, you definitely do not need it.

According to UDN report iWatch production targets cut in half.. Yawn.

I think Peter has made some very good points, and they remind me of advances in automobile ease of use. Why have electric windows when a hand crank works as well.  Keyless entry and push button start?  What's so hard about using a key?  Well, nothing I suppose...until you get used to not having to!

I don't know anyone who has such features who would willingly return to a more cumbersome way of using a car.  Perhaps something as simple as not having to reach for the phone for 7 out of 10 of the most common daily tasks will catch on.  Hard to tell, but again, I think Peter has pretty much nailed the appeal for younger, busier users who see themselves as early adopers.

One last thing that might catch on is ReadQuick. Have not tried reading messages or email one word at a time on a watch, but some who have think it works quite well.

Apple's developer guidelines suggest tasks should only take up to 10-15 seconds to complete on the Apple Watch.

As expected, the Apple Watch sold out in less than 6 hours, I put in an order @ 12:10 AM PDT and my watch is not going be shipped until mid-May. Not really a fan-boy myself, just want something that makes my life simpler.

I visited my local Apple store this morning and tried several watches on.  I have to say I was most impressed.  The build quality is superb and the straps are all very premium.  It's also less bulky that I expected.  My visit was quite early this morning and already most configurations were quoted as at least 4-6 weeks away for delivery - not sure if that was from today, or from the official 24th availability date.  Disappointed that it has to be delivered to your home - there isn't an option for delivery to the Apple store, or even another point for collection.

The Apple watch will make your life simpler?

You are joking surely?

Switch off your phone. That makes life simple. Do things by hand. Do what needs doing not what your technology prompts you to do. Go for a run. You don't need to measure anything to enjoy it, or to get the benefit. Get out of the car. Lift your garage door. Get back into the car. Drive in. It really is not complex. Use cash in a wallet to pay people..

I'm not a luddite, but I know complexity when I see it and much of what is sold adds to it rather than takes it away. The myth of needing continuous total connectivity is a curse. It enslaves us.

Wise words! I will need to play around with this toy for some time before I can say anything definitively. However, based on what I know atm, it looks like it is a useful gadget.

Must say that I think the layering of technology ie macbook/ ipad/ iphone/ iwatch creates an ever increasing burden of devices to manage before you actually get round to doing anything.  I think the iwatch is a step too far (then again I'm still not convinced by my ipad!).

As an aside, it was amusing to read the other week in some news article about the Clintons and their use of electronic devices for communication, that Bill Clinton's representative revealed (in a way which rather undermined Hilary's position) he has sent only two emails.  Doesn't seem to have held him back in some respects!
